Pastor de Hermas 59

1“Ouve,” respondeu: “o Filho de Deus não está em forma de escravo, mas em grande poder e força.” “Como assim, senhor?” disse eu; “não compreendo.” “Porque,” respondeu, “Deus plantou a vinha, isto é, criou o povo e o deu ao seu Filho; e o Filho pôs os seus anjos sobre eles para os guardar; e ele mesmo purgou os seus pecados, tendo sofrido muitas provações e suportado muitos trabalhos, pois ninguém é capaz de cavar sem labor e fadiga.

1“Hear,” he answered: “the Son of God is not in the form of a slave, but in great power and might.” “How so, sir?” I said; “I do not understand.” “Because,” he answered, “God planted the vineyard, that is to say, He created the people, and gave them to His Son; and the Son appointed His angels over them to keep them; and He Himself purged away their sins, having suffered many trials and undergone many labours, for no one is able to dig without labour and toil.

2Ele mesmo, então, tendo purgado os pecados do povo, mostrou-lhes os caminhos da vida, dando-lhes a lei que recebeu do seu Pai. [Vês,” disse, “que ele é o Senhor do povo, tendo recebido toda autoridade do seu Pai.] E por que o Senhor tomou o seu Filho como conselheiro, e os anjos gloriosos, a respeito da herança do escravo, escuta. O Espírito santo e preexistente, que criou toda criatura, Deus o fez habitar na carne que escolheu.

2He Himself, then, having purged away the sins of the people, showed them the paths of life by giving them the law which He received from His Father. [You see,” he said, “that He is the Lord of the people, having received all authority from His Father.] And why the Lord took His Son as councillor, and the glorious angels, regarding the heirship of the slave, listen. The holy, pre-existent Spirit, that created every creature, God made to dwell in flesh, which He chose.

3Esta carne, portanto, na qual habitou o Espírito Santo, foi nobremente sujeita àquele Espírito, andando religiosa e castamente, em nenhum aspecto contaminando o Espírito; e, portanto, depois de viver excelente e puramente, e depois de labutar e cooperar com o Espírito, e de em tudo ter agido vigorosa e corajosamente juntamente com o Espírito Santo, ele a assumiu como sócia do Espírito. Pois esta conduta da carne o agradou, porque não foi contaminada na terra enquanto tinha o Espírito Santo.

3This flesh, accordingly, in which the Holy Spirit dwelt, was nobly subject to that Spirit, walking religiously and chastely, in no respect defiling the Spirit; and accordingly, after living excellently and purely, and after labouring and co-operating with the Spirit, and having in everything acted vigorously and courageously along with the Holy Spirit, He assumed it as a partner with it. For this conduct of the flesh pleased Him, because it was not defiled on the earth while having the Holy Spirit.

4Tomou, portanto, como co-conselheiros o seu Filho e os anjos gloriosos, a fim de que esta carne, que fora sujeita ao corpo sem falta, tivesse algum lugar de tabernáculo, e não parecesse que a recompensa [da sua servidão se tinha perdido]; pois a carne que foi achada sem mancha nem contaminação, na qual habitou o Espírito Santo, [receberá recompensa]. Tens agora a explicação desta parábola também.”

4He took, therefore, as fellow-councillors His Son and the glorious angels, in order that this flesh, which had been subject to the body without a fault, might have some place of tabernacle, and that it might not appear that the reward [of its servitude had been lost]; for the flesh that has been found without spot or defilement, in which the Holy Spirit dwelt, [will receive a reward]. You now have the explanation of this parable also.”
