Pastor de Hermas 95

1“Como, senhor,” disse eu, “tornaram-se piores, depois de terem conhecido a Deus?” “Aquele que não conhece a Deus,” respondeu, “e pratica o mal, recebe certo castigo pela sua maldade; mas aquele que conheceu a Deus não deve mais fazer o mal, mas fazer o bem.

1“How, sir,” I said, “did they become worse, after having known God?” “He that does not know God,” he answered, “and practises evil, receives a certain chastisement for his wickedness; but he that has known God, ought not any longer to do evil, but to do good.

2Se, portanto, quando deve fazer o bem, faz o mal, não parece fazer maior mal do que aquele que não conhece a Deus? Por isso, os que não conheceram a Deus e fazem o mal são condenados à morte; mas os que conheceram a Deus e viram as suas obras poderosas e ainda continuam no mal serão castigados duplamente e morrerão para sempre. Deste modo, pois, será purificada a igreja de Deus.

2If, accordingly, when he ought to do good, he do evil, does not he appear to do greater evil than he who does not know God? For this reason, they who have not known God and do evil are condemned to death; but they who have known God, and have seen His mighty works, and still continue in evil, shall be chastised doubly, and shall die for ever. In this way, then, will the church of God be purified.

3Pois, assim como viste as pedras rejeitadas da torre e entregues aos espíritos maus e lançadas dali, assim [também elas serão lançadas fora, e] haverá um só corpo dos purificados, como também a torre se tornou, por assim dizer, de uma só pedra depois da sua purificação. Do mesmo modo será também com a igreja de Deus, depois de ter sido purificada e de ter rejeitado os maus, e os hipócritas, e os blasfemos, e os vacilantes, e os que cometem maldade de diversas espécies.

3For as you saw the stones rejected from the tower, and delivered to the evil spirits, and cast out thence, so [they also shall be cast out, and] there shall be one body of the purified, as the tower also became, as it were, of one stone after its purification. In like manner also shall it be with the church of God, after it has been purified, and has rejected the wicked, and the hypocrites, and the blasphemers, and the waverers, and those who commit wickedness of different kinds.

4Depois que estes forem lançados fora, a igreja de Deus será um só corpo, de uma só mente, de um só entendimento, de uma só fé, de um só amor. E então o Filho de Deus ficará extremamente alegre e se regozijará por eles, porque recebeu o seu povo puro.” “Todas estas coisas, senhor,” disse eu, “são grandes e gloriosas.

4After these have been cast away, the church of God shall be one body, of one mind, of one understanding, of one faith, of one love. And then the Son of God will be exceeding glad, and shall rejoice over them, because He has received His people pure.” “All these things, sir,” I said, “are great and glorious.

5“Além disso, senhor,” disse eu, “explica-me o poder e as ações de cada um dos montes, para que toda alma, confiando no Senhor e ouvindo-o, glorifique o seu nome grande, e maravilhoso, e glorioso.” “Ouve,” disse, “a diversidade dos montes e das doze nações.”

5“Moreover, sir,” I said, “explain to me the power and the actions of each one of the mountains, that every soul, trusting in the Lord, and hearing it, may glorify His great, and marvellous, and glorious name.” “Hear,” he said, “the diversity of the mountains and of the twelve nations.”
