Protoevangelho de Tiago 15

1E Anás, o escriba, veio a ele e disse: Por que não apareceste na nossa assembleia?

1And Annas the scribe came to him, and said: Why hast thou not appeared in our assembly?

2E José disse-lhe: Porque estava cansado da viagem e descansei o primeiro dia.

2And Joseph said to him: Because I was weary from my journey, and rested the first day.

3E ele voltou-se e viu que Maria estava grávida.

3And he turned, and saw that Mary was with child.

4E correu ao sacerdote e disse-lhe: José, por quem tu deste garantia, cometeu um crime grave.

4And he ran away to the priest, and said to him: Joseph, whom thou didst vouch for, has committed a grievous crime.

5E o sacerdote disse: Como assim?

5And the priest said: How so?

6E ele disse: Desonrou a virgem que recebeu do templo do Senhor, e casou-se com ela às escondidas, e não o revelou aos filhos de Israel.

6And he said: He has defiled the virgin whom he received out of the temple of the Lord, and has married her by stealth, and has not revealed it to the sons of Israel.

7E o sacerdote, respondendo, disse: José fez isto?

7And the priest answering, said: Has Joseph done this?

8Então disse Anás, o escriba: Envia oficiais, e acharás a virgem grávida.

8Then said Annas the scribe: Send officers, and thou wilt find the virgin with child.

9E os oficiais foram e acharam como ele tinha dito; e trouxeram-na, junto com José, ao tribunal.

9And the officers went away, and found it as he had said; and they brought her along with Joseph to the tribunal.

10E o sacerdote disse: Maria, por que fizeste isto? e por que humilhaste a tua alma e te esqueceste do Senhor teu Deus?

10And the priest said: Mary, why hast thou done this? and why hast thou brought thy soul low, and forgotten the Lord thy God?

11Tu, que foste criada no santo dos santos, e recebias alimento da mão de um anjo, e ouvias os hinos, e dançavas diante dele, por que fizeste isto?

11Thou that wast reared in the holy of holies, and that didst receive food from the hand of an angel, and didst hear the hymns, and didst dance before Him, why hast thou done this?

12E ela chorou amargamente, dizendo: Como vive o Senhor meu Deus, sou pura diante dele e não conheço homem.

12And she wept bitterly, saying: As the Lord my God liveth, I am pure before Him, and know not a man.

13E o sacerdote disse a José: Por que fizeste isto?

13And the priest said to Joseph: Why hast thou done this?

14E José disse: Como vive o Senhor, sou puro a respeito dela.

14And Joseph said: As the Lord liveth, I am pure concerning her.

15Então disse o sacerdote: Não dês falso testemunho, mas fala a verdade.

15Then said the priest: Bear not false witness, but speak the truth.

16Casaste-te com ela às escondidas, e não o revelaste aos filhos de Israel, e não inclinaste a cabeça sob a mão forte, para que a tua descendência fosse abençoada.

16Thou hast married her by stealth, and hast not revealed it to the sons of Israel, and hast not bowed thy head under the strong hand, that thy seed might be blessed.

17E José calou-se.

17And Joseph was silent.
