Protoevangelho de Tiago 19

1E vi uma mulher que descia da região montanhosa, e ela me disse: Ó homem, aonde vais?

1And I saw a woman coming down from the hill-country, and she said to me: O man, whither art thou going?

2E eu disse: Procuro uma parteira hebreia.

2And I said: I am seeking an Hebrew midwife.

3E ela respondeu e disse-me: És de Israel?

3And she answered and said unto me: Art thou of Israel?

4E eu lhe disse: Sim. E ela disse: E quem é que está dando à luz na gruta?

4And I said to her: Yes. And she said: And who is it that is bringing forth in the cave?

5E eu disse: Uma mulher que me foi prometida em casamento.

5And I said: A woman betrothed to me.

6E ela me disse: Não é ela tua mulher?

6And she said to me: Is she not thy wife?

7E eu lhe disse: É Maria, que foi criada no templo do Senhor, e que obtive por sorte como minha mulher.

7And I said to her: It is Mary that was reared in the temple of the Lord, and I obtained her by lot as my wife.

8E, no entanto, ela não é minha mulher, mas concebeu do Espírito Santo.

8And yet she is not my wife, but has conceived of the Holy Spirit.

9E a parteira disse-lhe: Isto é verdade?

9And the widwife said to him: Is this true?

10E José disse-lhe: Vem e vê.

10And Joseph said to her: Come and see.

11E a parteira foi com ele.

11And the midwife went away with him.

12E pararam no lugar da gruta, e eis que uma nuvem luminosa cobriu a gruta com a sua sombra.

12And they stood in the place of the cave, and behold a luminous cloud overshadowed the cave.

13E a parteira disse: Minha alma foi engrandecida neste dia, porque os meus olhos viram coisas estranhas--porque a salvação nasceu para Israel.

13And the midwife said: My soul has been magnified this day, because mine eyes have seen strange things--because salvation has been brought forth to Israel.

14E imediatamente a nuvem desapareceu da gruta, e uma grande luz resplandeceu na gruta, de modo que os olhos não a suportavam.

14And immediately the cloud disappeared out of the cave, and a great light shone in the cave, so that the eyes could not bear it.

15E em pouco tempo aquela luz foi diminuindo aos poucos, até que o menino apareceu, e foi e tomou o peito de sua mãe Maria.

15And in a little that light gradually decreased, until the infant appeared, and went and took the breast from His mother Mary.

16E a parteira exclamou e disse: Este é um grande dia para mim, porque vi este estranho espetáculo.

16And the midwife cried out, and said: This is a great day to me, because I have seen this strange sight.

17E a parteira saiu da gruta, e Salomé encontrou-a.

17And the midwife went forth out of the cave, and Salome met her.

18E disse-lhe: Salomé, Salomé, tenho um estranho espetáculo a contar-te: uma virgem deu à luz--coisa que a sua natureza não admite.

18And she said to her: Salome, Salome, I have a strange sight to relate to thee: a virgin has brought forth--a thing which her nature admits not of.

19Então disse Salomé: Como vive o Senhor meu Deus, se eu não puser o dedo e examinar as partes, não acreditarei que uma virgem deu à luz.

19Then said Salome: As the Lord my God liveth, unless I thrust in my finger, and search the parts, I will not believe that a virgin has brought forth.
