Protoevangelho de Tiago 8

1E seus pais desceram maravilhados e louvando o Senhor Deus, porque a criança não tinha voltado atrás.

1And her parents went down marvelling, and praising the Lord God, because the child had not turned back.

2E Maria estava no templo do Senhor como se fosse uma pomba que ali habitasse, e recebia alimento da mão de um anjo.

2And Mary was in the temple of the Lord as if she were a dove that dwelt there, and she received food from the hand of an angel.

3E quando ela tinha doze anos, houve um conselho dos sacerdotes, dizendo: Eis que Maria chegou aos doze anos de idade no templo do Senhor.

3And when she was twelve years old there was held a council of the priests, saying: Behold, Mary has reached the age of twelve years in the temple of the Lord.

4Que faremos então com ela, para que porventura não contamine o santuário do Senhor?

4What then shall we do with her, lest perchance she defile the sanctuary of the Lord?

5E disseram ao sumo sacerdote: Tu estás junto ao altar do Senhor; entra e ora a respeito dela; e o que o Senhor te manifestar, isso também faremos.

5And they said to the high priest: Thou standest by the altar of the Lord; go in, and pray concerning her; and whatever the Lord shall manifest unto thee, that also will we do.

6E o sumo sacerdote entrou, levando a veste das doze campainhas ao santo dos santos; e orou a respeito dela.

6And the high priest went in, taking the robe with the twelve bells into the holy of holies; and he prayed concerning her.

7E eis que um anjo do Senhor se pôs junto a ele, dizendo-lhe: Zacarias, Zacarias, sai e reúne os viúvos do povo, e tragam cada um a sua vara; e àquele a quem o Senhor mostrar um sinal, dele será ela esposa.

7And behold an angel of the Lord stood by him, saying unto him: Zacharias, Zacharias, go out and assemble the widowers of the people, and let them bring each his rod; and to whomsoever the Lord shall show a sign, his wife shall she be.

8E os arautos saíram por todo o território da Judeia, e a trombeta do Senhor soou, e todos acorreram.

8And the heralds went out through all the circuit of Judæa, and the trumpet of the Lord sounded, and all ran.
