Sabedoria de Salomão 11

1Ela fez prosperar as suas obras pela mão do santo profeta.

1She prospered their works in the hand of the holy prophet.

2Atravessaram o deserto inabitado e armaram tendas em lugares sem caminho.

2They went through the wilderness that was not inhabited, and pitched tents in places where there lay no way.

3Resistiram aos seus inimigos e se vingaram dos seus adversários.

3They stood against their enemies, and were avenged of their adversaries.

4Quando tiveram sede, invocaram-te, e foi-lhes dada água da rocha de sílex, e a sua sede foi saciada com a pedra dura.

4When they were thirsty, they called upon thee, and water was given them out of the flinty rock, and their thirst was quenched out of the hard stone.

5Pois aquilo com que os seus inimigos foram castigados, com isso mesmo eles foram beneficiados na sua necessidade.

5For by what things their enemies were punished, by the same they in their need were benefited.

6Pois, em vez da fonte perene de um rio turvado com sangue impuro,

6For instead of a perpetual running river troubled with foul blood,

7em castigo manifesto daquele decreto pelo qual os meninos eram mortos, deste-lhes água em abundância, por um meio que eles não esperavam,

7For a manifest reproof of that commandment, whereby the infants were slain, thou gavest unto them abundance of water by a means which they hoped not for:

8mostrando por aquela sede como havias castigado os seus adversários.

8Declaring by that thirst then how thou hadst punished their adversaries.

9Pois, quando foram provados, ainda que castigados com misericórdia, conheceram como os ímpios eram julgados com ira e atormentados, sofrendo sede de maneira diferente dos justos.

9For when they were tried albeit but in mercy chastised, they knew how the ungodly were judged in wrath and tormented, thirsting in another manner than the just.

10Pois a estes admoestaste e provaste como pai, mas àqueles condenaste e castigaste como rei severo.

10For these thou didst admonish and try, as a father: but the other, as a severe king, thou didst condemn and punish.

11Ausentes ou presentes, eram igualmente atormentados.

11Whether they were absent or present, they were vexed alike.

12Pois uma dupla aflição veio sobre eles, e um gemido pela lembrança das coisas passadas.

12For a double grief came upon them, and a groaning for the remembrance of things past.

13Pois, quando souberam que pelos seus próprios castigos os outros eram beneficiados, sentiram a mão do Senhor.

13For when they heard by their own punishments the other to be benefited, they had some feeling of the Lord.

14Pois aquele a quem com desprezo haviam rejeitado, quando outrora foi exposto no abandono dos meninos, a esse, no fim, vendo o que sucedeu, admiraram.

14For whom they respected with scorn, when he was long before thrown out at the casting forth of the infants, him in the end, when they saw what came to pass, they admired.

15Mas, pelos pensamentos insensatos da sua maldade, com os quais, enganados, adoravam serpentes irracionais e animais vis, enviaste contra eles, para vingança, uma multidão de animais irracionais,

15But for the foolish devices of their wickedness, wherewith being deceived they worshipped serpents void of reason, and vile beasts, thou didst send a multitude of unreasonable beasts upon them for vengeance;

16para que soubessem que aquilo com que alguém peca, com isso mesmo será castigado.

16That they might know, that wherewithal a man sinneth, by the same also shall he be punished.

17Pois não faltavam meios à tua mão todo-poderosa, que criou o mundo de matéria informe, para enviar contra eles uma multidão de ursos ou de leões ferozes,

17For thy Almighty hand, that made the world of matter without form, wanted not means to send among them a multitude of bears or fierce lions,

18ou feras desconhecidas, cheias de furor, recém-criadas, que exalassem um vapor de fogo, ou soltassem um fumo fétido, ou lançassem dos olhos terríveis faíscas,

18Or unknown wild beasts, full of rage, newly created, breathing out either a fiery vapour, or filthy scents of scattered smoke, or shooting horrible sparkles out of their eyes:

19das quais não só o dano os poderia exterminar de uma vez, mas também a vista terrível os destruiria totalmente.

19Whereof not only the harm might dispatch them at once, but also the terrible sight utterly destroy them.

20Sim, e mesmo sem isso, poderiam ter caído com um só sopro, perseguidos pela vingança e dispersos pelo sopro do teu poder; mas tu dispuseste todas as coisas com medida, número e peso.

20Yea, and without these might they have fallen down with one blast, being persecuted of vengeance, and scattered abroad through the breath of thy power: but thou hast ordered all things in measure and number and weight.

21Pois sempre podes mostrar a tua grande força quando queres; e quem pode resistir ao poder do teu braço?

21For thou canst shew thy great strength at all times when thou wilt; and who may withstand the power of thine arm?

22Pois o mundo inteiro diante de ti é como um grãozinho na balança, sim, como uma gota do orvalho da manhã que cai sobre a terra.

22For the whole world before thee is as a little grain of the balance, yea, as a drop of the morning dew that falleth down upon the earth.

23Mas tu tens misericórdia de todos, porque tudo podes, e dissimulas os pecados dos homens, para que se arrependam.

23But thou hast mercy upon all; for thou canst do all things, and winkest at the sins of men, because they should amend.

24Pois amas todas as coisas que existem, e não aborreces nada do que fizeste; pois, se odiasses alguma coisa, não a terias feito.

24For thou lovest all the things that are, and abhorrest nothing which thou hast made: for never wouldest thou have made any thing, if thou hadst hated it.

25E como poderia subsistir alguma coisa, se tu não quisesses? Ou como se conservaria, se não fosse chamada por ti?

25And how could any thing have endured, if it had not been thy will? or been preserved, if not called by thee?

26Mas tu poupas a todas, porque são tuas, ó Senhor, amante das almas.

26But thou sparest all: for they are thine, O Lord, thou lover of souls.
