Sabedoria de Salomão 2

1Pois os ímpios disseram, raciocinando entre si, mas não retamente: A nossa vida é curta e penosa, e na morte do homem não há remédio, nem se conhece alguém que tenha voltado da sepultura.

1For the ungodly said, reasoning with themselves, but not aright, Our life is short and tedious, and in the death of a man there is no remedy: neither was there any man known to have returned from the grave.

2Porque nascemos por acaso, e depois seremos como se nunca tivéssemos existido; pois o fôlego das nossas narinas é fumaça, e o pensamento, uma pequena centelha no bater do nosso coração;

2For we are born at all adventure: and we shall be hereafter as though we had never been: for the breath in our nostrils is as smoke, and a little spark in the moving of our heart:

3extinta ela, o nosso corpo se tornará em cinza, e o nosso espírito se desfará como o ar leve;

3Which being extinguished, our body shall be turned into ashes, and our spirit shall vanish as the soft air,

4e o nosso nome será esquecido com o tempo, e ninguém se lembrará das nossas obras; e a nossa vida passará como o rastro de uma nuvem, e se dissipará como a névoa afugentada pelos raios do sol e vencida pelo seu calor.

4And our name shall be forgotten in time, and no man shall have our works in remembrance, and our life shall pass away as the trace of a cloud, and shall be dispersed as a mist, that is driven away with the beams of the sun, and overcome with the heat thereof.

5Porque o nosso tempo é a passagem de uma sombra, e depois do nosso fim não há volta; porque está bem selado, e ninguém torna.

5For our time is a very shadow that passeth away; and after our end there is no returning: for it is fast sealed, so that no man cometh again.

6Vinde, pois, gozemos dos bens presentes, e usemos das criaturas com ardor, como na juventude.

6Come on therefore, let us enjoy the good things that are present: and let us speedily use the creatures like as in youth.

7Enchamo-nos de vinho precioso e de unguentos, e não deixemos passar a flor da primavera;

7Let us fill ourselves with costly wine and ointments: and let no flower of the spring pass by us:

8coroemo-nos de botões de rosas, antes que murchem;

8Let us crown ourselves with rosebuds, before they be withered:

9nenhum de nós fique sem a sua parte na nossa sensualidade; deixemos por toda parte sinais da nossa alegria, porque esta é a nossa porção e esta a nossa sorte.

9Let none of us go without his part of our voluptuousness: let us leave tokens of our joyfulness in every place: for this is our portion, and our lot is this.

10Oprimamos o justo pobre, não poupemos a viúva, nem respeitemos as cãs antigas do velho.

10Let us oppress the poor righteous man, let us not spare the widow, nor reverence the ancient gray hairs of the aged.

11Seja a nossa força a lei da justiça, porque o que é fraco se mostra inútil.

11Let our strength be the law of justice: for that which is feeble is found to be nothing worth.

12Armemos, pois, ciladas ao justo, porque nos é incômodo e é contrário às nossas obras; ele nos lança em rosto as nossas transgressões da lei e nos acusa das faltas contra a nossa educação.

12Therefore let us lie in wait for the righteous; because he is not for our turn, and he is clean contrary to our doings: he upbraideth us with our offending the law, and objecteth to our infamy the transgressings of our education.

13Ele se gaba de ter o conhecimento de Deus, e se chama filho do Senhor.

13He professeth to have the knowledge of God: and he calleth himself the child of the Lord.

14Tornou-se para nós censura dos nossos pensamentos.

14He was made to reprove our thoughts.

15É-nos penoso até vê-lo, porque a sua vida não é como a dos outros, e os seus caminhos são diferentes.

15He is grievous unto us even to behold: for his life is not like other men’s, his ways are of another fashion.

16Somos tidos por ele como moeda falsa; ele se afasta dos nossos caminhos como de imundícias; proclama feliz o fim dos justos e se gloria de ter a Deus por pai.

16We are esteemed of him as counterfeits: he abstaineth from our ways as from filthiness: he pronounceth the end of the just to be blessed, and maketh his boast that God is his father.

17Vejamos se as suas palavras são verdadeiras, e experimentemos o que lhe sucederá no fim.

17Let us see if his words be true: and let us prove what shall happen in the end of him.

18Porque, se o justo é filho de Deus, ele o ajudará e o livrará das mãos dos seus inimigos.

18For if the just man be the son of God, he will help him, and deliver him from the hand of his enemies.

19Provemo-lo com ultrajes e tormentos, para conhecermos a sua mansidão e experimentarmos a sua paciência.

19Let us examine him with despitefulness and torture, that we may know his meekness, and prove his patience.

20Condenemo-lo a uma morte vergonhosa, porque, segundo as suas palavras, será respeitado.

20Let us condemn him with a shameful death: for by his own saying he shall be respected.

21Assim pensaram, e se enganaram, porque a sua própria malícia os cegou.

21Such things they did imagine, and were deceived: for their own wickedness hath blinded them.

22Não conheceram os mistérios de Deus, nem esperaram o salário da santidade, nem estimaram a recompensa das almas irrepreensíveis.

22As for the mysteries of God, they knew them not: neither hoped they for the wages of righteousness, nor discerned a reward for blameless souls.

23Porque Deus criou o homem para a imortalidade, e o fez imagem da sua própria eternidade.

23For God created man to be immortal, and made him to be an image of his own eternity.

24Mas pela inveja do diabo entrou a morte no mundo, e os que são do seu partido a experimentam.

24Nevertheless through envy of the devil came death into the world: and they that do hold of his side do find it.
