Vidas dos Profetas 16

1Jonas, o profeta: era da terra de Cariatmaum, perto de Azoto, cidade dos gregos junto ao mar.

1Jonah the prophet: he was from the land of Kariathmaoum, near Azotus, a city of the Greeks by the sea.

2Naquele tempo Elias, o profeta, repreendia Acabe, rei de Samaria, e, tendo chamado sobre a terra uma grande fome, fugiu para o deserto.

2At that time Elijah the prophet was rebuking Ahab, king of Samaria, and having called down a great famine upon the land, he fled into the wilderness.

3E foi alimentado pelos corvos e bebia água da torrente.

3And he was fed by the ravens, and drank water from the brook.

4E quando a torrente secou, teve fome.

4And when the brook was dried up, he was hungry.

5E veio a Sarepta de Sidônia, a uma pobre mulher viúva, que era a mãe de Jonas; e entrou na casa dela, e ela lhe fez como ele lhe ordenou; e ele comeu e a abençoou com trigo e azeite e ficou com ela.

5And he came to Sarephtha of Sidonia, to a poor widow woman, who was the mother of Jonah; and he entered her house, and she did for him as he commanded her; and he ate, and blessed her with grain and oil, and remained with her.

6Pois não podia permanecer com incircuncisos.

6For he could not remain with the uncircumcised.

7E quando o filho dela, Jonas, morreu, Deus o ressuscitou por meio de Elias e o devolveu vivo à sua mãe, por causa da sua hospitalidade.

7And when her son Jonah died, God raised him up through Elijah, and gave him back alive to his mother, because of her hospitality.

8E quando Jonas atingiu a idade, foi enviado a Nínive, aos assírios.

8And when Jonah had come of age, he was sent to Nineveh, to the Assyrians.

9E Jonas procurou fugir do Senhor e foi engolido pelo cetáceo, querendo ir a Társis; e, saindo do cetáceo, proclamou a destruição de Nínive.

9And Jonah sought to flee from the Lord, and was swallowed by the whale, wishing to go to Tarshish; and coming out of the whale he proclaimed the destruction of Nineveh.

10E os ninivitas se arrependeram diante de Deus e foram tratados com misericórdia.

10And the Ninevites repented before God, and were shown mercy.

11E Jonas se entristeceu e, voltando, não permaneceu na sua terra, mas, tomando consigo a sua mãe, habitou na terra de Sur, dos estrangeiros.

11And Jonah was grieved, and returning he did not remain in his own land, but taking his mother with him, he dwelt in the land of Sour, of the foreigners.

12Pois dizia: “Assim me livrarei da afronta de ter profetizado falsamente contra Nínive.”

12For he said: "Thus shall I be rid of the reproach that I prophesied falsely against Nineveh."

13E, habitando na terra de Saar, ali morreu e foi sepultado na caverna de Cenezeu, o juiz.

13And dwelling in the land of Saar, there he died and was buried in the cave of Kenezeos the judge.

14Profetizou que, quando virem muitas nações em Jerusalém, vindas do ocidente, ela será devastada até o chão.

14He prophesied that when they see many nations in Jerusalem from the west, it will be laid waste to the ground.
