And the Lord came down from heaven, with Michael and Gabriel walking with Him, and many legions of angels singing psalms before Him; and they received the soul of Jacob Israel into the tabernacle of light, beside his holy fathers Abraham and Isaac.

Now these are the years of the life of Jacob Israel the patriarch: Joseph set him before Pharaoh when he was an hundred and thirty years old, and seventeen years he dwelt in Egypt; all these make an hundred and forty and seven years.

He rested in a good old age, being perfected in all virtue and spiritual blessing together; and he gave glory unto God in his departure, in the peace of God. Amen.

And Joseph cast himself upon his father and kissed him, weeping over him; and Joseph commanded his servants the embalmers, saying: 'Embalm my father well, after the custom of the Egyptians.'

And they fulfilled forty days in embalming Israel; and when the forty days of embalming Israel were ended, they mourned for him threescore and ten days; and Pharaoh also mourned, weeping for Jacob, by reason of his affection toward Joseph.

And Joseph spake unto the dignitaries of Pharaoh, saying unto them in this manner: 'If now I have found grace in your sight, speak unto Pharaoh the king, saying: My father made me swear when he was about to depart from the body, saying: Bury my body in the sepulchre of my fathers in the land of Canaan; now therefore let him permit me to bury my father in that place, and I will return.'

Pharaoh the king said unto Joseph the wise: 'Go up in peace, and bury thy father according to the oath wherewith he made thee swear; take with thee chariots, and horsemen, and all the nobles of my kingdom, and of my servants whomsoever thou desirest.' And Joseph worshipped God in the presence of Pharaoh, and departed from him.

And Joseph went forth to bury his father, and all the servants of Pharaoh went forth with him, and the elders of Egypt, and all the house of Joseph, and his brethren, and all the house of Israel; and chariots and horsemen went up with him, a very great camp.

And when they came to the threshing-floor of Gilead, which is beyond Jordan, they lamented for him there with a great and sore lamentation, being moved with exceeding sorrow, and made mourning for him seven days; and they that dwelt in the land of Canaan heard the lamentation at the threshing-floor of Gilead, and said: 'This is a grievous mourning to the Egyptians'; wherefore unto this day they call that place The Mourning of Egypt.

And they carried Israel, and buried him in the land of Canaan, in the double cave which Abraham bought for a possession of a burying-place from Ephron the Hittite, before Mamre; and Joseph returned into Egypt, he and his brethren and all the company of Pharaoh's house; and Joseph lived after the death of his father an hundred and ten years, ruling over Egypt; and Jacob Israel died, and was gathered unto his people.
