1 Macabeus 11

1E o rei do Egito reuniu um grande exército, como a areia que está na praia do mar, e muitos navios, e procurava por engano apoderar-se do reino de Alexandre e uni-lo ao seu.

1And the king of Egypt gathered together a great host, like the sand that lieth upon the sea shore, and many ships, and went about through deceit to get Alexander’s kingdom, and join it to his own.

2Por isso partiu para a Síria em tom pacífico, de modo que os das cidades lhe abriam as portas e iam ao seu encontro; pois o rei Alexandre lhes ordenara que assim fizessem, porque era seu sogro.

2Whereupon he took his journey into Spain in peaceable manner, so as they of the cities opened unto him, and met him: for king Alexander had commanded them so to do, because he was his brother in law.

3Ora, à medida que Ptolomeu entrava nas cidades, punha em cada uma delas uma guarnição de soldados para a guardar.

3Now as Ptolemee entered into the cities, he set in every one of them a garrison of soldiers to keep it.

4E, quando se aproximou de Azoto, mostraram-lhe o templo de Dagom queimado, e Azoto e os seus arredores destruídos, e os corpos lançados por terra, e os que ele queimara na batalha; pois tinham feito montões deles pelo caminho por onde ele havia de passar.

4And when he came near to Azotus, they shewed him the temple of Dagon that was burnt, and Azotus and the suburbs thereof that were destroyed, and the bodies that were cast abroad and them that he had burnt in the battle; for they had made heaps of them by the way where he should pass.

5Contaram também ao rei tudo o que Jônatas fizera, para que o censurasse; mas o rei ficou calado.

5Also they told the king whatsoever Jonathan had done, to the intent he might blame him: but the king held his peace.

6Então Jônatas foi ao encontro do rei com grande pompa em Jope, onde se saudaram e pernoitaram.

6Then Jonathan met the king with great pomp at Joppa, where they saluted one another, and lodged.

7Depois Jônatas, tendo ido com o rei até o rio chamado Eleutero, voltou para Jerusalém.

7Afterward Jonathan, when he had gone with the king to the river called Eleutherus, returned again to Jerusalem.

8O rei Ptolomeu, pois, tendo obtido o domínio das cidades do litoral até Selêucia, junto ao mar, tramava maus desígnios contra Alexandre.

8King Ptolemee therefore, having gotten the dominion of the cities by the sea unto Seleucia upon the sea coast, imagined wicked counsels against Alexander.

9Por isso enviou embaixadores ao rei Demétrio, dizendo: Vem, façamos aliança entre nós, e eu te darei minha filha, que Alexandre tem, e reinarás no reino de teu pai;

9Whereupon he sent ambassadors unto king Demetrius, saying, Come, let us make a league betwixt us, and I will give thee my daughter whom Alexander hath, and thou shalt reign in thy father’s kingdom:

10pois arrependo-me de lhe ter dado minha filha, porque ele procurou matar-me.

10For I repent that I gave my daughter unto him, for he sought to slay me.

11Assim o caluniava, porque cobiçava o seu reino.

11Thus did he slander him, because he was desirous of his kingdom.

12Por isso lhe tirou a filha e a deu a Demétrio, e abandonou Alexandre, de modo que a inimizade entre eles se tornou manifesta.

12Wherefore he took his daughter from him, and gave her to Demetrius, and forsook Alexander, so that their hatred was openly known.

13Então Ptolomeu entrou em Antioquia, onde pôs duas coroas na cabeça: a coroa da Ásia e a do Egito.

13Then Ptolemee entered into Antioch, where he set two crowns upon his head, the crown of Asia, and of Egypt.

14Entretanto, o rei Alexandre estava na Cilícia, porque os que habitavam naquelas regiões se tinham revoltado contra ele.

14In the mean season was king Alexander in Cilicia, because those that dwelt in those parts had revolted from him.

15Mas, quando Alexandre soube disto, veio fazer-lhe guerra; então o rei Ptolomeu fez sair o seu exército, e foi ao encontro dele com grande poder, e o pôs em fuga.

15But when Alexander heard of this, he came to war against him: whereupon king Ptolemee brought forth his host, and met him with a mighty power, and put him to flight.

16Assim Alexandre fugiu para a Arábia, para ali ser protegido; mas o rei Ptolomeu foi exaltado;

16So Alexander fled into Arabia there to be defended; but king Ptolemee was exalted:

17pois Zabdiel, o árabe, cortou a cabeça de Alexandre e a enviou a Ptolomeu.

17For Zabdiel the Arabian took off Alexander’s head, and sent it unto Ptolemee.

18Também o rei Ptolomeu morreu três dias depois, e os que estavam nas fortalezas foram mortos uns pelos outros.

18King Ptolemee also died the third day after, and they that were in the strong holds were slain one of another.

19Deste modo Demétrio reinou no ano cento e sessenta e sete.

19By this means Demetrius reigned in the hundred threescore and seventh year.

20Naquele mesmo tempo, Jônatas reuniu os que estavam na Judeia para tomar a cidadela que estava em Jerusalém; e fez contra ela muitas máquinas de guerra.

20At the same time Jonathan gathered together them that were in Judea to take the tower that was in Jerusalem: and he made many engines of war against it.

21Então vieram alguns ímpios, que odiavam o seu próprio povo, foram ao rei e lhe disseram que Jônatas sitiava a cidadela.

21Then came ungodly persons, who hated their own people, went unto the king, and told him that Jonathan besieged the tower,

22Ao ouvir isto, ele se irou, e, partindo imediatamente, veio a Ptolemaida e escreveu a Jônatas que não sitiasse a cidadela, mas viesse falar com ele em Ptolemaida com toda a pressa.

22Whereof when he heard, he was angry, and immediately removing, he came to Ptolemais, and wrote unto Jonathan, that he should not lay siege to the tower, but come and speak with him at Ptolemais in great haste.

23Contudo, Jônatas, ao ouvir isto, ordenou que continuassem o cerco; e escolheu alguns dos anciãos de Israel e dos sacerdotes, e se expôs ao perigo;

23Nevertheless Jonathan, when he heard this, commanded to besiege it still: and he chose certain of the elders of Israel and the priests, and put himself in peril;

24e tomou prata e ouro, e vestes, e diversos outros presentes, e foi a Ptolemaida, ao rei, onde achou graça aos seus olhos.

24And took silver and gold, and raiment, and divers presents besides, and went to Ptolemais unto the king, where he found favour in his sight.

25E, embora alguns ímpios do povo tivessem feito queixas contra ele,

25And though certain ungodly men of the people had made complaints against him,

26o rei o tratou como os seus predecessores o tinham tratado antes, e o exaltou diante de todos os seus amigos,

26Yet the king entreated him as his predecessors had done before, and promoted him in the sight of all his friends,

27e o confirmou no sumo sacerdócio e em todas as honras que antes tinha, e lhe deu a preeminência entre os seus principais amigos.

27And confirmed him in the high priesthood, and in all the honours that he had before, and gave him preeminence among his chief friends.

28Então Jônatas pediu ao rei que isentasse de tributo a Judeia, como também os três distritos, com a terra de Samaria; e lhe prometeu trezentos talentos.

28Then Jonathan desired the king, that he would make Judea free from tribute, as also the three governments, with the country of Samaria; and he promised him three hundred talents.

29O rei consentiu e escreveu a Jônatas cartas sobre todas estas coisas, desta maneira:

29So the king consented, and wrote letters unto Jonathan of all these things after this manner:

30O rei Demétrio a seu irmão Jônatas e à nação dos judeus, saudação.

30King Demetrius unto his brother Jonathan, and unto the nation of the Jews, sendeth greeting:

31Enviamo-vos aqui uma cópia da carta que escrevemos a nosso parente Lástenes a vosso respeito, para que a vejais.

31We send you here a copy of the letter which we did write unto our cousin Lasthenes concerning you, that ye might see it.

32O rei Demétrio a seu pai Lástenes, saudação.

32King Demetrius unto his father Lasthenes sendeth greeting:

33Resolvemos fazer bem ao povo dos judeus, que são nossos amigos e guardam os pactos conosco, por causa da sua boa vontade para conosco.

33We are determined to do good to the people of the Jews, who are our friends, and keep covenants with us, because of their good will toward us.

34Por isso lhes confirmamos os limites da Judeia, com os três distritos de Aferema, e Lida, e Ramataim, que são acrescentados à Judeia da terra de Samaria, e tudo o que lhes pertence, para todos os que sacrificam em Jerusalém, em lugar dos pagamentos que o rei antes recebia deles cada ano dos frutos da terra e das árvores.

34Wherefore we have ratified unto them the borders of Judea, with the three governments of Apherema and Lydda and Ramathem, that are added unto Judea from the country of Samaria, and all things appertaining unto them, for all such as do sacrifice in Jerusalem, instead of the payments which the king received of them yearly aforetime out of the fruits of the earth and of trees.

35E, quanto às outras coisas que nos pertencem, os dízimos e os impostos que nos cabem, como também as salinas e as taxas da coroa que nos são devidas, de tudo isto os dispensamos, para seu alívio.

35And as for other things that belong unto us, of the tithes and customs pertaining unto us, as also the saltpits, and the crown taxes, which are due unto us, we discharge them of them all for their relief.

36E nada disto será revogado, desde agora e para sempre.

36And nothing hereof shall be revoked from this time forth for ever.

37Agora, pois, cuida de fazer uma cópia destas coisas, e seja entregue a Jônatas, e posta no monte santo em lugar bem visível.

37Now therefore see that thou make a copy of these things, and let it be delivered unto Jonathan, and set upon the holy mount in a conspicuous place.

38Depois disto, quando o rei Demétrio viu que a terra estava em paz diante dele e que não se lhe fazia resistência, despediu todas as suas tropas, cada uma para o seu lugar, exceto alguns bandos de estrangeiros que reunira das ilhas dos gentios; por isso todas as tropas de seus pais o odiaram.

38After this, when king Demetrius saw that the land was quiet before him, and that no resistance was made against him, he sent away all his forces, every one to his own place, except certain bands of strangers, whom he had gathered from the isles of the heathen: wherefore all the forces of his fathers hated him.

39Ora, havia um certo Trifão, que antes fora do partido de Alexandre, o qual, vendo que todo o exército murmurava contra Demétrio, foi ter com Simalcué, o árabe, que criava Antíoco, o jovem filho de Alexandre,

39Moreover there was one Tryphon, that had been of Alexander’s part afore, who, seeing that all the host murmured against Demetrius, went to Simalcue the Arabian that brought up Antiochus the young son of Alexander,

40e insistiu muito com ele que lhe entregasse este jovem Antíoco, para que reinasse em lugar de seu pai; contou-lhe, pois, tudo o que Demétrio fizera, e como os seus homens de guerra lhe eram hostis; e ficou ali muito tempo.

40And lay sore upon him to deliver him this young Antiochus, that he might reign in his father’s stead: he told him therefore all that Demetrius had done, and how his men of war were at enmity with him, and there he remained a long season.

41Entretanto, Jônatas mandou pedir ao rei Demétrio que expulsasse de Jerusalém os da cidadela e também os das fortalezas; pois pelejavam contra Israel.

41In the mean time Jonathan sent unto king Demetrius, that he would cast those of the tower out of Jerusalem, and those also in the fortresses: for they fought against Israel.

42Então Demétrio mandou dizer a Jônatas: Não só farei isto por ti e pelo teu povo, mas honrarei grandemente a ti e à tua nação, se houver ocasião.

42So Demetrius sent unto Jonathan, saying, I will not only do this for thee and thy people, but I will greatly honour thee and thy nation, if opportunity serve.

43Agora, pois, farás bem se me enviares homens que me ajudem; pois todas as minhas tropas me abandonaram.

43Now therefore thou shalt do well, if thou send me men to help me; for all my forces are gone from me.

44Então Jônatas lhe enviou três mil homens valentes a Antioquia; e, quando chegaram ao rei, o rei se alegrou muito com a sua vinda.

44Upon this Jonathan sent him three thousand strong men unto Antioch: and when they came to the king, the king was very glad of their coming.

45Contudo, os da cidade se reuniram no meio da cidade, em número de cento e vinte mil homens, e queriam matar o rei.

45Howbeit they that were of the city gathered themselves together into the midst of the city, to the number of an hundred and twenty thousand men, and would have slain the king.

46Por isso o rei fugiu para o palácio; mas os da cidade ocuparam as passagens da cidade e começaram a pelejar.

46Wherefore the king fled into the court, but they of the city kept the passages of the city, and began to fight.

47Então o rei chamou os judeus em seu socorro, os quais vieram a ele todos de uma vez e, espalhando-se pela cidade, mataram naquele dia na cidade em número de cem mil.

47Then the king called to the Jews for help, who came unto him all at once, and dispersing themselves through the city slew that day in the city to the number of an hundred thousand.

48Também atearam fogo à cidade, e tomaram muitos despojos naquele dia, e livraram o rei.

48Also they set fire on the city, and gat many spoils that day, and delivered the king.

49Quando os da cidade viram que os judeus se tinham apoderado da cidade como queriam, perderam o ânimo; por isso suplicaram ao rei, e clamaram, dizendo:

49So when they of the city saw that the Jews had got the city as they would, their courage was abated: wherefore they made supplication to the king, and cried, saying,

50Concede-nos a paz, e cessem os judeus de atacar a nós e à cidade.

50Grant us peace, and let the Jews cease from assaulting us and the city.

51Com isto lançaram fora as armas e fizeram a paz; e os judeus foram honrados diante do rei e diante de todos os que estavam no seu reino; e voltaram para Jerusalém com grandes despojos.

51With that they cast away their weapons, and made peace; and the Jews were honoured in the sight of the king, and in the sight of all that were in his realm; and they returned to Jerusalem, having great spoils.

52Assim o rei Demétrio se assentou no trono do seu reino, e a terra ficou em paz diante dele.

52So king Demetrius sat on the throne of his kingdom, and the land was quiet before him.

53Contudo, fingiu em tudo o que dizia, e afastou-se de Jônatas, e não o recompensou segundo os benefícios que dele recebera, mas o afligiu muito.

53Nevertheless he dissembled in all that ever he spake, and estranged himself from Jonathan, neither rewarded he him according to the benefits which he had received of him, but troubled him very sore.

54Depois disto voltou Trifão, e com ele o jovem Antíoco, que reinou e foi coroado.

54After this returned Tryphon, and with him the young child Antiochus, who reigned, and was crowned.

55Então se reuniram a ele todos os homens de guerra que Demétrio despedira, e pelejaram contra Demétrio, que voltou as costas e fugiu.

55Then there gathered unto him all the men of war, whom Demetrius had put away, and they fought against Demetrius, who turned his back and fled.

56Além disso, Trifão tomou os elefantes e conquistou Antioquia.

56Moreover Tryphon took the elephants, and won Antioch.

57Naquele tempo o jovem Antíoco escreveu a Jônatas, dizendo: Confirmo-te no sumo sacerdócio, e te nomeio governador dos quatro distritos, e para seres um dos amigos do rei.

57At that time young Antiochus wrote unto Jonathan, saying, I confirm thee in the high priesthood, and appoint thee ruler over the four governments, and to be one of the king’s friends.

58Por isso lhe enviou vasos de ouro para o seu serviço, e deu-lhe licença para beber em ouro, e vestir-se de púrpura, e usar uma fivela de ouro.

58Upon this he sent him golden vessels to be served in, and gave him leave to drink in gold, and to be clothed in purple, and to wear a golden buckle.

59Também a Simão, seu irmão, fez chefe desde o lugar chamado Escada de Tiro até os limites do Egito.

59His brother Simon also he made captain from the place called The ladder of Tyrus unto the borders of Egypt.

60Então Jônatas saiu e passou pelas cidades além do rio, e todas as tropas da Síria se reuniram a ele para o ajudar; e, quando chegou a Ascalom, os da cidade o receberam com honra.

60Then Jonathan went forth, and passed through the cities beyond the water, and all the forces of Syria gathered themselves unto him for to help him: and when he came to Ascalon, they of the city met him honourably.

61Dali foi a Gaza; mas os de Gaza lhe fecharam as portas; por isso a sitiou, e queimou os seus arredores, e os saqueou.

61From whence he went to Gaza, but they of Gaza shut him out; wherefore he laid siege unto it, and burned the suburbs thereof with fire, and spoiled them.

62Depois, quando os de Gaza suplicaram a Jônatas, ele fez a paz com eles, e tomou como reféns os filhos dos seus principais homens, e os enviou a Jerusalém; e atravessou a terra até Damasco.

62Afterward, when they of Gaza made supplication unto Jonathan, he made peace with them, and took the sons of their chief men for hostages, and sent them to Jerusalem, and passed through the country unto Damascus.

63Quando Jônatas ouviu que os príncipes de Demétrio tinham chegado a Cades, que está na Galileia, com grande poder, com o propósito de o afastar da terra,

63Now when Jonathan heard that Demetrius’ princes were come to Cades, which is in Galilee, with a great power, purposing to remove him out of the country,

64foi ao encontro deles e deixou Simão, seu irmão, na terra.

64He went to meet them, and left Simon his brother in the country.

65Então Simão acampou contra Betsura e a atacou muito tempo, e a cercou;

65Then Simon encamped against Bethsura and fought against it a long season, and shut it up:

66mas eles quiseram fazer a paz com ele, o que ele lhes concedeu; e então os expulsou dali, e tomou a cidade, e pôs nela uma guarnição.

66But they desired to have peace with him, which he granted them, and then put them out from thence, and took the city, and set a garrison in it.

67Quanto a Jônatas e ao seu exército, acamparam junto à água de Genesar, de onde, de madrugada, foram à planície de Hasor.

67As for Jonathan and his host, they pitched at the water of Gennesar, from whence betimes in the morning they gat them to the plain of Nasor.

68E eis que o exército dos estrangeiros os encontrou na planície; e, tendo posto homens de emboscada contra ele nos montes, vieram eles mesmos de frente contra ele.

68And, behold, the host of strangers met them in the plain, who, having laid men in ambush for him in the mountains, came themselves over against him.

69Assim, quando os que estavam de emboscada saíram dos seus lugares e travaram combate, todos os do lado de Jônatas fugiram;

69So when they that lay in ambush rose out of their places and joined battle, all that were of Jonathan’s side fled;

70de modo que não ficou nenhum deles, exceto Matatias, filho de Absalão, e Judas, filho de Calfi, capitães do exército.

70Insomuch as there was not one of them left, except Mattathias the son of Absalom, and Judas the son of Calphi, the captains of the host.

71Então Jônatas rasgou as vestes, e lançou terra sobre a cabeça, e orou.

71Then Jonathan rent his clothes, and cast earth upon his head, and prayed.

72Depois, voltando à batalha, pô-los em fuga, e assim eles fugiram.

72Afterwards turning again to battle, he put them to flight, and so they ran away.

73Quando os seus próprios homens que tinham fugido viram isto, voltaram para ele, e com ele os perseguiram até Cades, até as suas próprias tendas, e ali acamparam.

73Now when his own men that were fled saw this, they turned again unto him, and with him pursued them to Cades, even unto their own tents, and there they camped.

74Assim foram mortos dos gentios naquele dia cerca de três mil homens; e Jônatas voltou para Jerusalém.

74So there were slain of the heathen that day about three thousand men: but Jonathan returned to Jerusalem.
