1 Macabeus 15

1Além disso, Antíoco, filho do rei Demétrio, enviou das ilhas do mar cartas a Simão, sacerdote e príncipe dos judeus, e a todo o povo;

1Moreover Antiochus son of Demetrius the king sent letters from the isles of the sea unto Simon the priest and prince of the Jews, and to all the people;

2cujo conteúdo era este: O rei Antíoco a Simão, sumo sacerdote e príncipe da sua nação, e ao povo dos judeus, saudação.

2The contents whereof were these: King Antiochus to Simon the high priest and prince of his nation, and to the people of the Jews, greeting:

3Visto que alguns homens pestilentos usurparam o reino de nossos pais, e é meu propósito reivindicá-lo, para o restaurar ao seu antigo estado, e para isso reuni uma multidão de soldados estrangeiros e preparei navios de guerra;

3Forasmuch as certain pestilent men have usurped the kingdom of our fathers, and my purpose is to challenge it again, that I may restore it to the old estate, and to that end have gathered a multitude of foreign soldiers together, and prepared ships of war;

4sendo também meu intento atravessar a terra, para me vingar dos que a destruíram e assolaram muitas cidades do reino:

4My meaning also being to go through the country, that I may be avenged of them that have destroyed it, and made many cities in the kingdom desolate:

5agora, pois, confirmo-te todas as isenções que os reis antes de mim te concederam, e todos os outros presentes que te concederam.

5Now therefore I confirm unto thee all the oblations which the kings before me granted thee, and whatsoever gifts besides they granted.

6Dou-te também licença para cunhar moeda com o teu próprio cunho para a tua terra.

6I give thee leave also to coin money for thy country with thine own stamp.

7E, quanto a Jerusalém e ao santuário, sejam livres; e todas as armas que fizeste, e as fortalezas que edificaste e tens nas tuas mãos, fiquem contigo.

7And as concerning Jerusalem and the sanctuary, let them be free; and all the armour that thou hast made, and fortresses that thou hast built, and keepest in thine hands, let them remain unto thee.

8E, se alguma coisa se deve ou se dever ao rei, seja-te perdoada desde agora e para sempre.

8And if anything be, or shall be, owing to the king, let it be forgiven thee from this time forth for evermore.

9Além disso, quando tivermos obtido o nosso reino, honrar-te-emos a ti, e à tua nação, e ao teu templo com grande honra, de modo que a vossa honra seja conhecida em todo o mundo.

9Furthermore, when we have obtained our kingdom, we will honour thee, and thy nation, and thy temple, with great honour, so that your honour shall be known throughout the world.

10No ano cento e setenta e quatro, Antíoco foi à terra de seus pais; e naquele tempo todas as tropas se reuniram a ele, de modo que poucos ficaram com Trifão.

10In the hundred threescore and fourteenth year went Antiochus into the land of his fathers: at which time all the forces came together unto him, so that few were left with Tryphon.

11Por isso, perseguido pelo rei Antíoco, fugiu para Dora, que fica junto ao mar;

11Wherefore being pursued by king Antiochus, he fled unto Dora, which lieth by the sea side:

12pois via que os males lhe sobrevinham todos de uma vez e que as suas tropas o tinham abandonado.

12For he saw that troubles came upon him all at once, and that his forces had forsaken him.

13Então Antíoco acampou contra Dora, tendo consigo cento e vinte mil homens de guerra e oito mil cavaleiros.

13Then camped Antiochus against Dora, having with him an hundred and twenty thousand men of war, and eight thousand horsemen.

14E, tendo cercado a cidade em redor e aproximado os navios da cidade pelo lado do mar, apertava a cidade por terra e por mar, e não deixava ninguém sair nem entrar.

14And when he had compassed the city round about, and joined ships close to the town on the sea side, he vexed the city by land and by sea, neither suffered he any to go out or in.

15Entretanto, Numênio e os seus chegaram de Roma, trazendo cartas para os reis e as terras, nas quais estavam escritas estas coisas:

15In the mean season came Numenius and his company from Rome, having letters to the kings and countries; wherein were written these things:

16Lúcio, cônsul dos romanos, ao rei Ptolomeu, saudação.

16Lucius, consul of the Romans unto king Ptolemee, greeting:

17Os embaixadores dos judeus, nossos amigos e aliados, vieram a nós para renovar a antiga amizade e aliança, enviados por Simão, o sumo sacerdote, e pelo povo dos judeus;

17The Jews’ ambassadors, our friends and confederates, came unto us to renew the old friendship and league, being sent from Simon the high priest, and from the people of the Jews:

18e trouxeram um escudo de ouro de mil libras.

18And they brought a shield of gold of a thousand pound.

19Por isso julgamos bem escrever aos reis e às terras que não lhes façam mal, nem pelejem contra eles, nem contra as suas cidades ou terras, nem ajudem os seus inimigos contra eles.

19We thought it good therefore to write unto the kings and countries, that they should do them no harm, nor fight against them, their cities, or countries, nor yet aid their enemies against them.

20Pareceu-nos bem também receber deles o escudo.

20It seemed also good to us to receive the shield of them.

21Se, pois, houver alguns homens pestilentos que tenham fugido da sua terra para junto de vós, entregai-os a Simão, o sumo sacerdote, para que os castigue segundo a sua própria lei.

21If therefore there be any pestilent fellows, that have fled from their country unto you, deliver them unto Simon the high priest, that he may punish them according to their own law.

22As mesmas coisas escreveu igualmente ao rei Demétrio, e a Átalo, a Ariárates e a Ársaces,

22The same things wrote he likewise unto Demetrius the king, and Attalus, to Ariarathes, and Arsaces,

23e a todas as terras, e a Sampsames, e aos lacedemônios, e a Delos, e Mindo, e Sicião, e Cária, e Samos, e Panfília, e Lícia, e Halicarnasso, e Rodes, e Arado, e Cós, e Side, e Arado, e Gortina, e Cnido, e Chipre, e Cirene.

23And to all the countries and to Sampsames, and the Lacedemonians, and to Delus, and Myndus, and Sicyon, and Caria, and Samos, and Pamphylia, and Lycia, and Halicarnassus, and Rhodus, and Aradus, and Cos, and Side, and Aradus, and Gortyna, and Cnidus, and Cyprus, and Cyrene.

24E escreveram uma cópia disto a Simão, o sumo sacerdote.

24And the copy hereof they wrote to Simon the high priest.

25Assim o rei Antíoco acampou contra Dora no segundo dia, atacando-a continuamente e fazendo máquinas, com as quais encerrou Trifão, de modo que não podia sair nem entrar.

25So Antiochus the king camped against Dora the second day, assaulting it continually, and making engines, by which means he shut up Tryphon, that he could neither go out nor in.

26Naquele tempo Simão lhe enviou dois mil homens escolhidos para o ajudar; também prata, e ouro, e muitas armas.

26At that time Simon sent him two thousand chosen men to aid him; silver also, and gold, and much armour.

27Contudo, ele não os quis receber, mas quebrou todos os pactos que antes fizera com ele, e se tornou estranho para com ele.

27Nevertheless he would not receive them, but brake all the covenants which he had made with him afore, and became strange unto him.

28Além disso, enviou-lhe Atenóbio, um dos seus amigos, para tratar com ele e dizer: Vós retendes Jope e Gazara, com a cidadela que está em Jerusalém, que são cidades do meu reino.

28Furthermore he sent unto him Athenobius, one of his friends, to commune with him, and say, Ye withhold Joppa and Gazera; with the tower that is in Jerusalem, which are cities of my realm.

29Devastastes os seus territórios, e fizestes grande mal à terra, e obtivestes o domínio de muitos lugares do meu reino.

29The borders thereof ye have wasted, and done great hurt in the land, and got the dominion of many places within my kingdom.

30Agora, pois, entregai as cidades que tomastes, e os tributos dos lugares de que obtivestes o domínio fora dos limites da Judeia;

30Now therefore deliver the cities which ye have taken, and the tributes of the places, whereof ye have gotten dominion without the borders of Judea:

31ou então dai-me por elas quinhentos talentos de prata; e, pelo dano que fizestes e pelos tributos das cidades, outros quinhentos talentos; do contrário, viremos e pelejaremos contra vós.

31Or else give me for them five hundred talents of silver; and for the harm that ye have done, and the tributes of the cities, other five hundred talents: if not, we will come and fight against you.

32Assim Atenóbio, amigo do rei, veio a Jerusalém; e, quando viu a glória de Simão, e o aparador com a baixela de ouro e de prata, e o seu grande séquito, ficou espantado, e lhe comunicou a mensagem do rei.

32So Athenobius the king’s friend came to Jerusalem: and when he saw the glory of Simon, and the cupboard of gold and silver plate, and his great attendance, he was astonished, and told him the king’s message.

33Então Simão respondeu e lhe disse: Não tomamos terra alheia, nem retemos o que pertence a outros, mas a herança de nossos pais, que os nossos inimigos possuíram injustamente por algum tempo.

33Then answered Simon, and said unto him, We have neither taken other men’s land, nor holden that which appertaineth to others, but the inheritance of our fathers, which our enemies had wrongfully in possession a certain time.

34Por isso nós, tendo a ocasião, retemos a herança de nossos pais.

34Wherefore we, having opportunity, hold the inheritance of our fathers.

35E, quanto a Jope e Gazara, que reclamas, embora tenham feito grande mal ao povo da nossa terra, contudo te daremos por elas cem talentos. A isto Atenóbio não lhe respondeu palavra;

35And whereas thou demandest Joppa and Gazera, albeit they did great harm unto the people in our country, yet will we give thee an hundred talents for them. Hereunto Athenobius answered him not a word;

36mas voltou irado ao rei e lhe relatou estas palavras, e a glória de Simão, e tudo o que vira; por isso o rei se irou muitíssimo.

36But returned in a rage to the king, and made report unto him of these speeches, and of the glory of Simon, and of all that he had seen: whereupon the king was exceeding wroth.

37Entretanto, Trifão fugiu num navio para Ortósia.

37In the mean time fled Tryphon by ship unto Orthosias.

38Então o rei fez Cendebeu comandante do litoral e lhe deu um exército de infantaria e cavalaria,

38Then the king made Cendebeus captain of the sea coast, and gave him an host of footmen and horsemen,

39e ordenou-lhe que movesse o seu exército contra a Judeia; também lhe ordenou que reedificasse Cedrom e fortificasse as portas, e fizesse guerra ao povo; mas o próprio rei perseguia Trifão.

39And commanded him to remove his host toward Judea; also he commanded him to build up Cedron, and to fortify the gates, and to war against the people; but as for the king himself, he pursued Tryphon.

40Assim Cendebeu veio a Jâmnia e começou a provocar o povo, e a invadir a Judeia, e a levar cativo o povo e a matá-lo.

40So Cendebeus came to Jamnia and began to provoke the people and to invade Judea, and to take the people prisoners, and slay them.

41E, tendo reedificado Cedrom, pôs ali cavaleiros e um exército de infantaria, para que, saindo, fizessem incursões pelos caminhos da Judeia, como o rei lhe ordenara.

41And when he had built up Cedron, he set horsemen there, and an host of footmen, to the end that issuing out they might make outroads upon the ways of Judea, as the king had commanded him.
