4 Baruque 4

1E, quando veio a manhã, eis que o exército dos caldeus cercou a cidade; e o grande anjo tocou a trombeta, dizendo: Entrai na cidade, ó exército dos caldeus; porque eis que a porta vos está aberta.

1And when morning was come, behold, the host of the Chaldeans compassed the city; and the great angel sounded the trumpet, saying: Enter into the city, ye host of the Chaldeans; for behold, the gate is opened unto you.

2Assim, o rei entrou com a sua multidão, e levaram cativo todo o povo.

2So the king entered in with his multitude, and they carried away all the people captive.

3E Jeremias, tomando as chaves do templo, saiu da cidade e lançou-as diante do sol, dizendo: A ti digo, ó sol, toma as chaves do templo de Deus e guarda-as até o dia em que o Senhor te pedir contas delas.

3And Jeremiah, taking the keys of the temple, went forth out of the city, and cast them before the sun, saying: To thee I say, O sun, take the keys of the temple of God, and keep them until the day in which the Lord shall inquire of thee concerning them.

4Porque não fomos achados dignos de guardá-las, pois nos tornamos despenseiros da falsidade.

4For we were not found worthy to keep them, because we became stewards of falsehood.

5Enquanto Jeremias ainda chorava pelo povo, foram arrastados para a Babilônia.

5While Jeremiah was yet weeping for the people, they were dragged away into Babylon.

6Mas Baruque pôs pó sobre a cabeça, sentou-se e chorou esta lamentação, dizendo: Por que foi Jerusalém feita desolada? Por causa dos pecados do povo amado foi ela entregue nas mãos dos inimigos; por causa dos nossos pecados e dos do povo.

6But Baruch put dust upon his head, and sat down, and wept this lamentation, saying: Why was Jerusalem made desolate? Because of the sins of the beloved people was she delivered into the hands of enemies; because of our sins and those of the people.

7Mas não se glorie o ímpio, nem diga: Prevalecemos com a nossa força para tomar a cidade de Deus. Fostes vós capazes contra ela? Não, mas por causa dos nossos pecados fomos entregues.

7But let not the lawless boast, and say: We have prevailed to take the city of God by our might. Were ye able against her? Nay, but because of our sins were we delivered.

8E o nosso Deus terá piedade de nós e nos trará de volta à nossa cidade; mas vós não tereis vida.

8And our God will have pity upon us, and will bring us back into our city; but ye shall not have life.

9Bem-aventurados os nossos pais, Abraão, Isaque e Jacó, pois partiram deste mundo e não viram a desolação desta cidade.

9Blessed are our fathers, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, for they departed out of this world, and saw not the desolation of this city.

10E, tendo dito estas coisas, saiu, chorando e dizendo: Aflito por ti, ó Jerusalém, de ti me apartei.

10And having said these things, he went forth, weeping and saying: Grieving for thy sake, O Jerusalem, I departed from thee.

11E permaneceu num sepulcro, sentado, e os anjos vinham e lhe relatavam todas as coisas.

11And he abode in a tomb, sitting, the angels coming and relating to him concerning all things.
