4 Baruque 5

1E Abimeleque levava os figos no calor; e, chegando a uma árvore, sentou-se à sombra dela para descansar um pouco e, apoiando a cabeça sobre o cesto de figos, adormeceu, dormindo sessenta e seis anos; e não foi despertado do seu sono.

1And Abimelech carried the figs in the heat; and coming upon a tree, he sat down under the shadow of it to rest a little, and leaning his head upon the basket of figs he fell asleep, sleeping sixty and six years; and he was not awakened out of his sleep.

2E depois destas coisas, sendo levantado do seu sono, disse: De bom grado teria dormido ainda um pouco, e a minha cabeça está pesada, porque não me fartei de sono.

2And after these things, being raised up from his sleep, he said: I would gladly have slept yet a little, and my head is heavy, for I have not had my fill of sleep.

3E, descobrindo o cesto de figos, achou-os gotejando leite.

3And uncovering the basket of figs, he found them dropping milk.

4E disse: Quis dormir um pouco, porque a minha cabeça está pesada;

4And he said: I wished to sleep a little, for my head is heavy;

5mas temo que eu durma e demore a despertar, e Jeremias, meu pai, me tenha em pouca conta; pois, se ele não tivesse pressa, não me teria enviado ao romper do dia de hoje.

5but I fear lest I sleep and be slow to awake, and Jeremiah my father think little of me; for if he were not in haste, he would not have sent me at daybreak this day.

6Levantando-me, pois, seguirei no calor, e vá eu para onde não há calor, nem há labuta dia após dia.

6Arising therefore, I will go on in the heat, and let me go away to where there is no heat, nor is there toil day by day.

7Assim, despertado, tomou o cesto de figos, pô-lo sobre os ombros; e entrou em Jerusalém, e não a reconheceu, nem a casa, nem o lugar, nem os seus próprios parentes; e disse:

7So, being awakened, he took up the basket of figs, and laid it upon his shoulders; and he entered into Jerusalem, and knew it not, neither the house, nor the place, nor his own kindred; and he said:

8Bendito seja o Senhor, pois um grande espanto caiu sobre mim; esta não é a cidade.

8Blessed be the Lord, for a great amazement hath fallen upon me; this is not the city.

9Perdi o caminho, pois vim pelo caminho da montanha,

9I have gone astray, for I came by the way of the mountain,

10tendo-me levantado do meu sono, e estando a minha cabeça pesada por não me haver saciado de sono, errei o caminho.

10being raised up from my sleep, and my head being heavy because I was not satisfied with my sleep, I have erred from the way.

11É coisa de espantar dizer isto diante de Jeremias, que perdi o caminho.

11It is a marvel to say this before Jeremiah, that I have gone astray.

12E saiu da cidade; e, refletindo, viu os sinais da cidade, e disse: Esta é, de fato, a cidade, mas eu perdi o caminho.

12And he went out from the city; and considering, he saw the tokens of the city, and said: This indeed is the city, but I have gone astray.

13E de novo voltou à cidade, e procurou, e não achou nenhum dos seus.

13And again he returned into the city, and sought, and found none of his own.

14E disse: Bendito seja o Senhor, pois um grande espanto caiu sobre mim.

14And he said: Blessed be the Lord, for a great amazement hath fallen upon me.

15E de novo saiu para fora da cidade. E permaneceu aflito, sem saber para onde devia ir.

15And again he went out outside the city. And he abode grieving, not knowing whither he should go.

16E pôs no chão o cesto, dizendo: Sentar-me-ei aqui, até que o Senhor tire de mim este espanto.

16And he laid down the basket, saying: I will sit here, until the Lord take this amazement away from me.

17E, estando ele sentado, viu um homem idoso que vinha do campo, e Abimeleque lhe diz: A ti falo, ancião, que cidade é esta? E ele lhe disse: É Jerusalém.

17And as he sat, he saw a certain aged man coming from the field, and Abimelech saith unto him: To thee I say, old man, what city is this? And he said unto him: It is Jerusalem.

18E Abimeleque lhe diz: Onde está Jeremias, o sacerdote, e Baruque, o leitor, e todo o povo desta cidade, pois não os achei?

18And Abimelech saith unto him: Where is Jeremiah the priest, and Baruch the reader, and all the people of this city, for I have not found them?

19E o velho lhe disse: Não és tu desta cidade,

19And the old man said unto him: Art thou not of this city,

20tu que hoje te lembraste de Jeremias, que perguntas por ele depois de tanto tempo?

20who this day hast remembered Jeremiah, that thou inquirest concerning him after so long a time?

21Pois Jeremias está na Babilônia com o povo; porque foram levados cativos por Nabucodonosor, o rei, e com eles está Jeremias, para lhes pregar as boas-novas e instruí-los na palavra.

21For Jeremiah is in Babylon with the people; for they were carried captive by Nebuchadnezzar the king, and with them is Jeremiah, to preach glad tidings unto them and to instruct them in the word.

22E, quando Abimeleque logo ouviu isto do ancião, disse:

22And when Abimelech straightway heard this from the aged man, he said:

23Se não fosses um homem velho, e se não fosse ilícito a um homem insultar quem é maior do que ele, eu teria zombado de ti e dito que estás louco, por teres dito: O povo foi levado cativo para a Babilônia.

23If thou wert not an old man, and if it were not unlawful for a man to insult one greater than himself, I would have laughed thee to scorn, and would have said that thou art mad, in that thou hast said: The people were carried captive into Babylon.

24Desceram sobre eles as cataratas do céu? Ainda não é tempo de ir para a Babilônia.

24Were the cataracts of heaven come down upon them? It is not yet the time to go away into Babylon.

25Pois há quanto tempo foi que meu pai Jeremias me enviou ao campo de Agripa por alguns figos, para que os déssemos aos enfermos do povo; e fui e os trouxe,

25For how long a while is it since my father Jeremiah sent me to the field of Agrippa for a few figs, that we might give them to the sick of the people; and I went away and brought them,

26e, chegando a uma certa árvore no calor, sentei-me para descansar um pouco, e pus a cabeça sobre o cesto, e dormi; e, despertado, descobri o cesto de figos, supondo que me havia demorado, e achei os figos gotejando leite, tal como os colhi.

26and coming to a certain tree in the heat, I sat down to rest a little, and I laid my head upon the basket, and slept; and being awakened, I uncovered the basket of figs, supposing that I had tarried, and I found the figs dropping milk, even as I gathered them.

27E dizes tu que o povo foi levado cativo para a Babilônia? Mas, para que o saibas, toma, vê os figos.

27And thou sayest that the people were carried captive into Babylon? But that thou mayest know, take, see the figs.

28E descobriu o cesto de figos diante do velho.

28And he uncovered the basket of figs to the old man.

29E ele os viu gotejando leite. E, quando o ancião os viu, disse:

29And he saw them dropping milk. And when the aged man saw them, he said:

30Ó meu filho, tu és um homem justo, e Deus não quis mostrar-te a desolação da cidade. Pois Deus trouxe sobre ti este espanto. Porque eis que hoje faz sessenta e seis anos que o povo foi levado cativo para a Babilônia.

30O my son, thou art a righteous man, and God would not show thee the desolation of the city. For God brought this amazement upon thee. For behold, it is this day sixty and six years since the people were carried captive into Babylon.

31E para que aprendas, meu filho, que é verdade, olha para o campo e vê que já apareceu o crescimento das searas; vê também os figos, que não é a estação deles, e reconhece.

31And that thou mayest learn, my child, that it is true, look up unto the field and see that the growth of the crops hath appeared; see also the figs, that it is not the season for them, and know.

32Então Abimeleque clamou em alta voz, dizendo: Bendir-te-ei, ó Senhor Deus do céu e da terra, o descanso das almas dos justos em todo lugar.

32Then Abimelech cried with a loud voice, saying: I will bless thee, O Lord God of heaven and earth, the rest of the souls of the righteous in every place.

33E diz ao ancião: Que mês é este? E ele disse: Nisã; e é o dia doze.

33And he saith to the aged man: What month is this? And he said: Nisan; and it is the twelfth.

34E, tomando alguns dos figos, deu-os ao ancião, e lhe diz: Deus te guie pela luz até a Jerusalém do alto.

34And taking some of the figs, he gave them to the aged man, and saith unto him: God shall lead thee by light unto the Jerusalem above.
