4 Esdras 4

1E o anjo que me fora enviado, cujo nome era Uriel, respondeu-me,

1And the angel that was sent unto me, whose name was Uriel, gave me an answer,

2E disse: O teu coração foi longe demais neste mundo, e pensas tu compreender os caminhos do Altíssimo?

2And said, Thy heart hath gone to far in this world, and thinkest thou to comprehend the way of the most High?

3Então disse eu: Sim, meu senhor. E ele me respondeu e disse: Sou enviado para te mostrar três caminhos e propor-te três parábolas;

3Then said I, Yea, my lord. And he answered me, and said, I am sent to shew thee three ways, and to set forth three similitudes before thee:

4Das quais, se puderes declarar-me uma, também te mostrarei o caminho que desejas ver, e te ensinarei de onde procede o coração maligno.

4Whereof if thou canst declare me one, I will shew thee also the way that thou desirest to see, and I shall shew thee from whence the wicked heart cometh.

5E eu disse: Fala, meu senhor. Então me disse ele: Vai, pesa-me o peso do fogo, ou mede-me o sopro do vento, ou faze-me voltar o dia que já passou.

5And I said, Tell on, my lord. Then said he unto me, Go thy way, weigh me the weight of the fire, or measure me the blast of the wind, or call me again the day that is past.

6Então respondi e disse: Que homem é capaz de fazer isto, para que de mim exijas tais coisas?

6Then answered I and said, What man is able to do that, that thou shouldest ask such things of me?

7E ele me disse: Se eu te perguntasse quão grandes moradas há no meio do mar, ou quantas fontes há no princípio do abismo, ou quantas correntes de águas estão sobre o firmamento, ou quais são as saídas do paraíso;

7And he said unto me, If I should ask thee how great dwellings are in the midst of the sea, or how many springs are in the beginning of the deep, or how many springs are above the firmament, or which are the outgoings of paradise:

8Talvez me dirias: Nunca desci ao abismo, nem até ao inferno, nem jamais subi ao céu.

8Peradventure thou wouldest say unto me, I never went down into the deep, nor as yet into hell, neither did I ever climb up into heaven.

9Contudo, agora não te perguntei senão acerca do fogo e do vento, e do dia pelo qual passaste, coisas das quais não podes estar separado; e contudo nada disto podes responder-me.

9Nevertheless now have I asked thee but only of the fire and wind, and of the day wherethrough thou hast passed, and of things from which thou canst not be separated, and yet canst thou give me no answer of them.

10Disse-me ainda: As coisas que são tuas e que cresceram contigo, não as podes conhecer;

10He said moreover unto me, Thine own things, and such as are grown up with thee, canst thou not know;

11Como, pois, poderá o teu vaso compreender o caminho do Altíssimo, e, estando o mundo exteriormente corrompido, entender a corrupção que é patente aos meus olhos?

11How should thy vessel then be able to comprehend the way of the Highest, and, the world being now outwardly corrupted to understand the corruption that is evident in my sight?

12Então lhe disse eu: Melhor nos fora não existir de modo algum, do que vivermos ainda na maldade, e sofrermos, sem saber por quê.

12Then said I unto him, It were better that we were not at all, than that we should live still in wickedness, and to suffer, and not to know wherefore.

13Ele me respondeu e disse: Fui a uma floresta numa planície, e as árvores consultaram entre si,

13He answered me, and said, I went into a forest into a plain, and the trees took counsel,

14E disseram: Vinde, vamos e pelejemos contra o mar, para que ele se retire de diante de nós, e façamos para nós outras matas.

14And said, Come, let us go and make war against the sea that it may depart away before us, and that we may make us more woods.

15Semelhantemente, as vagas do mar tomaram conselho e disseram: Vinde, subamos e sujeitemos os bosques da planície, para que ali também nos façamos outra região.

15The floods of the sea also in like manner took counsel, and said, Come, let us go up and subdue the woods of the plain, that there also we may make us another country.

16Mas o desígnio do bosque foi vão, porque o fogo veio e o consumiu.

16The thought of the wood was in vain, for the fire came and consumed it.

17Do mesmo modo o intento das ondas do mar se reduziu a nada, porque a areia se levantou e as deteve.

17The thought of the floods of the sea came likewise to nought, for the sand stood up and stopped them.

18Se fosses agora juiz entre estas duas coisas, a qual começarias a justificar, ou a qual condenarias?

18If thou wert judge now betwixt these two, whom wouldest thou begin to justify? or whom wouldest thou condemn?

19Respondi e disse: Verdadeiramente foi vão o pensamento que ambas maquinaram; porque a terra foi dada ao bosque, e o mar também tem o seu lugar para suster as suas vagas.

19I answered and said, Verily it is a foolish thought that they both have devised, for the ground is given unto the wood, and the sea also hath his place to bear his floods.

20Então me respondeu ele e disse: Deste um julgamento reto; porém por que não julgas a ti mesmo também?

20Then answered he me, and said, Thou hast given a right judgment, but why judgest thou not thyself also?

21Porque, assim como a terra é dada à floresta e o mar às suas ondas, assim também os que habitam sobre a terra não podem entender senão o que está sobre a terra; e aquele que habita sobre os céus pode tão somente entender as coisas que estão acima da altura dos céus.

21For like as the ground is given unto the wood, and the sea to his floods: even so they that dwell upon the earth may understand nothing but that which is upon the earth: and he that dwelleth above the heavens may only understand the things that are above the height of the heavens.

22Então respondi e disse: Rogo-te, ó Senhor, que me dês entendimento:

22Then answered I and said, I beseech thee, O Lord, let me have understanding:

23Porque não foi meu intento indagar acerca das coisas do alto, mas daquelas que passam diariamente por nós; a saber, por que Israel é entregue como opróbrio aos gentios, e por que causa o povo a quem amaste foi entregue a nações ímpias; e por que a lei de nossos pais foi reduzida a nada, e os pactos escritos perderam o efeito;

23For it was not my mind to be curious of the high things, but of such as pass by us daily, namely, wherefore Israel is given up as a reproach to the heathen, and for what cause the people whom thou hast loved is given over unto ungodly nations, and why the law of our forefathers is brought to nought, and the written covenants come to none effect,

24E nós passamos deste mundo como gafanhotos, e a nossa vida é espanto e temor, e não somos dignos de alcançar misericórdia.

24And we pass away out of the world as grasshoppers, and our life is astonishment and fear, and we are not worthy to obtain mercy.

25Que fará ele, pois, ao seu nome pelo qual somos chamados? Acerca destas coisas perguntei.

25What will he then do unto his name whereby we are called? of these things have I asked.

26Então ele me respondeu e disse: Quanto mais esquadrinhares, tanto mais te maravilharás; porque o mundo se apressa velozmente para passar,

26Then answered he me, and said, The more thou searchest, the more thou shalt marvel; for the world hasteth fast to pass away,

27E não pode compreender as coisas que estão prometidas aos justos no tempo vindouro; porque este século está cheio de injustiça e de enfermidades.

27And cannot comprehend the things that are promised to the righteous in time to come: for this world is full of unrighteousness and infirmities.

28Mas acerca das coisas de que me perguntas, eu te direi; pois o mal foi semeado, mas a sua destruição ainda não veio.

28But as concerning the things whereof thou askest me, I will tell thee; for the evil is sown, but the destruction thereof is not yet come.

29Se, pois, aquilo que foi semeado não for transtornado, e se não passar o lugar onde o mal foi semeado, não poderá vir o lugar onde o bem é semeado.

29If therefore that which is sown be not turned upside down, and if the place where the evil is sown pass not away, then cannot it come that is sown with good.

30Porque o grão de semente má foi semeado no coração de Adão desde o princípio; quanta impiedade não tem gerado até este tempo, e quanto produzirá ainda até que venha o tempo da debulha?

30For the grain of evil seed hath been sown in the heart of Adam from the beginning, and how much ungodliness hath it brought up unto this time? and how much shall it yet bring forth until the time of threshing come?

31Considera, pois, por ti mesmo, quão grande fruto de iniquidade produziu o grão de semente má.

31Ponder now by thyself, how great fruit of wickedness the grain of evil seed hath brought forth.

32E quando forem ceifadas as espigas, as quais são sem número, quão grande eira encherão?

32And when the ears shall be cut down, which are without number, how great a floor shall they fill?

33Então respondi e disse: Como e quando hão de suceder estas coisas? Por que são os nossos anos poucos e maus?

33Then I answered and said, How, and when shall these things come to pass? wherefore are our years few and evil?

34E ele me respondeu, dizendo: Não te apresses mais do que o Altíssimo; pois a tua pressa é vã para estar acima dele, porque nisso tens excedido muito.

34And he answered me, saying, Do not thou hasten above the most Highest: for thy haste is in vain to be above him, for thou hast much exceeded.

35Não perguntaram também as almas dos justos acerca destas coisas nas suas câmaras, dizendo: Até quando esperarei desta maneira? Quando virá o fruto da eira da nossa recompensa?

35Did not the souls also of the righteous ask question of these things in their chambers, saying, How long shall I hope on this fashion? when cometh the fruit of the floor of our reward?

36E a estas coisas respondeu-lhes o arcanjo Uriel, dizendo: Quando o número das sementes estiver completo em vós; porque ele pesou o mundo na balança.

36And unto these things Uriel the archangel gave them answer, and said, Even when the number of seeds is filled in you: for he hath weighed the world in the balance.

37Por medida mediu os tempos, e por número contou os tempos; e não os moverá nem os agitará, até que a dita medida se cumpra.

37By measure hath he measured the times; and by number hath he numbered the times; and he doth not move nor stir them, until the said measure be fulfilled.

38Então respondi e disse: Ó Senhor soberano, também nós todos estamos cheios de impiedade.

38Then answered I and said, O Lord that bearest rule, even we all are full of impiety.

39E porventura por causa de nós é que as eiras dos justos não estão cheias, por causa dos pecados dos que habitam sobre a terra.

39And for our sakes peradventure it is that the floors of the righteous are not filled, because of the sins of them that dwell upon the earth.

40Então ele me respondeu e disse: Vai ter com a mulher grávida, e pergunta-lhe se, tendo cumprido os seus nove meses, poderá o seu ventre reter o feto por mais tempo dentro de si.

40So he answered me, and said, Go thy way to a woman with child, and ask of her when she hath fulfilled her nine months, if her womb may keep the birth any longer within her.

41Então disse eu: Não, Senhor, isso não pode ela fazer. E ele me disse: Na sepultura, as câmaras das almas são semelhantes à madre da mulher:

41Then said I, No, Lord, that can she not. And he said unto me, In the grave the chambers of souls are like the womb of a woman:

42Porque, assim como a mulher que está de parto se apressa para escapar à necessidade das dores do parto, assim também estes lugares se apressam para entregar as coisas que lhes foram confiadas.

42For like as a woman that travaileth maketh haste to escape the necessity of the travail: even so do these places haste to deliver those things that are committed unto them.

43Desde o princípio, eis que aquilo que desejas ver te será mostrado.

43From the beginning, look, what thou desirest to see, it shall be shewed thee.

44Então respondi e disse: Se achei graça diante dos teus olhos, e se for possível, e se eu for idôneo para isso,

44Then answered I and said, If I have found favour in thy sight, and if it be possible, and if I be meet therefore,

45Mostra-me, pois, se há mais por vir do que já passou, ou se o que já passou é mais do que o que está por vir.

45Shew me then whether there be more to come than is past, or more past than is to come.

46O que passou eu sei, mas o que há de vir não sei.

46What is past I know, but what is for to come I know not.

47E ele me disse: Põe-te em pé do lado direito, e eu te explicarei a parábola.

47And he said unto me, Stand up upon the right side, and I shall expound the similitude unto thee.

48Assim estive em pé, e vi, e eis que um forno ardente passou diante de mim; e sucedeu que, quando a chama havia passado, olhei, e eis que a fumaça ainda permanecia.

48So I stood, and saw, and, behold, an hot burning oven passed by before me: and it happened that when the flame was gone by I looked, and, behold, the smoke remained still.

49Depois disto passou diante de mim uma nuvem carregada de água, e desceu muita chuva com tempestade; e, passada a chuva tempestuosa, as gotas ainda permaneciam.

49After this there passed by before me a watery cloud, and sent down much rain with a storm; and when the stormy rain was past, the drops remained still.

50Então me disse ele: Considera contigo mesmo; assim como a chuva é mais do que as gotas, e como o fogo é maior do que a fumaça, todavia as gotas e a fumaça ficaram para trás: assim a porção que passou sobrepujou em muito.

50Then said he unto me, Consider with thyself; as the rain is more than the drops, and as the fire is greater than the smoke; but the drops and the smoke remain behind: so the quantity which is past did more exceed.

51Então orei e disse: Julgas tu que viverei até esse tempo? Ou o que há de acontecer naqueles dias?

51Then I prayed, and said, May I live, thinkest thou, until that time? or what shall happen in those days?

52Ele respondeu e disse: Quanto aos sinais acerca dos quais me perguntas, posso dizer-te deles em parte; mas, no tocante à tua vida, não sou enviado para to revelar, porque não o sei.

52He answered me, and said, As for the tokens whereof thou askest me, I may tell thee of them in part: but as touching thy life, I am not sent to shew thee; for I do not know it.
