4 Macabeus 14

1Não ignorais o amor fraterno, do qual a divina e sapientíssima Providência deu herança àqueles que são gerados por seus pais, implantando-o neles desde o ventre materno; no qual os irmãos habitam por igual período, e tomam forma durante o mesmo tempo, e são nutridos do mesmo sangue, e são vivificados com a mesma alma, e são dados à luz após o mesmo espaço de tempo, e bebem o leite das mesmas fontes, pelas quais as suas almas fraternais são amamentadas juntas nos braços maternos; e unem-se ainda mais estreitamente mediante a comum criação, a diária convivência e a mútua instrução, e pela nossa disciplina sob a Lei de Deus.

1You are not ignorant of the love of brethren, whereof the divine and all-wise Providence has given an inheritance to those who are begotten though their fathers, implanting it in them even through the mother's womb; wherein brethren do dwell the like period, and take their form during the same time, and are nourished from the same blood, and are quickened with the same soul, and are brought into the world after the same space, and they draw milk from the same founts, whereby their fraternal souls are nursed together in arms at the breast; and they are knit yet closer through a common nurture and daily companionship and other education, and through our discipline under the Law of God.

2Sendo, pois, tão forte por natureza o afeto fraternal, os sete irmãos tinham a sua mútua concórdia ainda mais robustecida. Porque, exercitados na mesma Lei, disciplinados nas mesmas virtudes e criados juntos numa vida íntegra, amavam-se uns aos outros mais abundantemente. O seu zelo comum pela excelência moral e bondade aumentava a sua mútua concórdia, pois, em união com a sua piedade, tornava o seu amor fraternal mais fervoroso.

2The feeling of brotherly love being thus naturally strong, the seven brethren had their mutual concord made yet stronger. For trained in the same Law, and disciplined in the same virtues, and brought up together in the upright life, they loved one another the more abundantly. Their common zeal for moral beauty and goodness heightened their mutual concord, for in conjunction with their piety it rendered their brotherly love more fervent.

3Contudo, embora a natureza, a convivência e a sua virtuosa disposição aumentassem o ardor do seu amor fraterno, os filhos sobreviventes suportaram, mediante a sua religião, a visão de seus irmãos que estavam no suplício, sendo torturados até à morte; e mais ainda, chegaram a encorajá-los a enfrentar a agonia, de sorte que não somente desprezaram os seus próprios tormentos, mas também venceram a paixão do afeto fraternal por seus irmãos.

3But though nature, companionship, and their virtuous disposition increased the ardour of their brotherly love, nevertheless the surviving sons through their religion supported the sight of their brethren, who were on the rack, being tortured to death; nay more, they even encouraged them to face the agony, so as not only to despise their own tortures, but also to conquer their passion of brotherly affection for their brethren.

4Ó mentes guiadas pela Razão, mais régias que os próprios reis, mais livres que os homens livres, da harmonia dos sete irmãos, santa e perfeitamente afinada no tom da piedade!

4O Reasoning minds, more kingly than kings, than freemen more free, of the harmony of the seven brethren, holy and well attuned to the keynote of piety!

5Nenhum dos sete jovens se acovardou, nenhum recuou diante da morte, mas todos se apressaram para a morte pelo tormento como quem corre pelo caminho da imortalidade.

5None of the seven youths turned coward, none shrunk in the face of death, but all hastened to the death by torture as if running the road to immortality.

6Pois, assim como as mãos e os pés se movem em harmonia com os impulsos da alma, assim aqueles santos jovens, como que impelidos pela alma imortal da religião, caminharam em concórdia para a morte por causa dela.

6For as hands and feet move in harmony with the promptings of the soul, so those holy youths, as if prompted by the immortal soul of religion, went in harmony to death for its sake.

7Ó santíssima e sétupla fraternidade de irmãos em harmonia!

7O all-holy sevenfold companionship of brethren in harmony!

8Porque, assim como os sete dias da criação do mundo circundam a piedade, assim os jovens, à semelhança de um coro, cingiram a sua sétupla companhia e consideraram em nada o pavor dos tormentos.

8For as the seven days of the creation of the world do enring religion, so did the youths choir-like enring their sevenfold companionship, and made the terror of the tortures of no account.

9Nós agora estremecemos ao ouvir falar dos sofrimentos daqueles jovens; mas eles, não apenas vendo-os com os seus olhos, nem somente ouvindo a ameaça proferida e iminente, mas sentindo em si mesmos a dor, suportaram tudo até ao fim; e isto sob o suplício do fogo, além do qual que maior agonia se poderá encontrar?

9We now shudder when we hear of the suffering of those youths; but they, not only seeing it with their eyes, nor merely hearing the spoken, imminent threat, but actually feeling the pang, endured it through; and that in the torture by fire, than which what greater agony can be found?

10Pois penetrante e veemente é o poder do fogo, e velozmente consumiu os seus corpos até à destruição.

10For sharp and stringent is the power of fire, and swiftly did it bring their bodies to dissolution.

11E não julgueis admirável se naqueles homens a Razão triunfou sobre os tormentos, quando até a alma de uma mulher desprezou uma variedade ainda maior de dores; porquanto a mãe dos sete jovens suportou os suplícios infligidos a cada um de seus filhos.

11And think it not wonderful if with those men Reason triumphed over the tortures, when even a woman's soul despised a yet greater diversity of pains; for the mother of the seven youths endured the torments inflicted on each several one of her children.

12Considerai, porém, quão múltiplos são os anseios do coração materno, de modo que o seu apego aos filhos se torna o centro de todo o seu ser; e com efeito, até os animais irracionais têm para com as suas crias um afeto e um amor semelhantes aos dos homens.

12But consider how manifold are the yearnings of a mother's heart, so that her feeling for her offspring becomes the centre of her whole world; and indeed, here, even the irrational animals have for their young an affection and love similar to men's.

13Por exemplo, entre as aves, as mansas que se abrigam sob os nossos telhados defendem os seus passarinhos; e as que nidificam nos cumes dos montes, e nas fendas das rochas, e nos ocos das árvores, e nos ramos, chocando ali os seus filhotes, afugentam igualmente o intruso.

13For example, among the birds, the tame ones sheltering under our roofs defend their nestlings; and those that nest upon the mountain tops, and in the rock clefts, and in the holes of trees, and in the branches, and hatch their young there, do also drive away the intruder.

14E se não conseguem afugentá-lo, esvoaçam ao redor dos filhotes em ardente afeto, chamando-os na sua própria linguagem, e socorrem os seus pequeninos de qualquer maneira que lhes é possível.

14And then, if they be unable to drive him away, they flutter around the nestlings in a passion of love, calling to them in their own speech, and they give succour to their young ones in whatever fashion they can.

15E que necessidade temos de exemplos do amor pelos filhotes entre os animais irracionais, quando até as abelhas, no tempo em que constroem os favos, repelem os invasores e ferem com o seu ferrão, como com uma espada, aos que se aproximam das suas crias, pelejando contra eles até à morte?

15And what need have we of examples of the love of offspring among irrational animals, when even the bees, about the season of the making of the comb, fend off intruders, and stab with their sting, as with a sword, those who approach their brood, and do battle against them even to the death?

16Ela, porém, a mãe daqueles valorosos jovens, dotada de uma alma semelhante à de Abraão, não foi demovida do seu propósito pelo afeto a seus filhos.

16But she, the mother of those young men, with a soul like Abraham, was not moved from her purpose by her affection for her children.
