4 Macabeus 18

1Ó israelitas, filhos gerados da semente de Abraão, obedecei a esta Lei e sede justos em todos os vossos caminhos, reconhecendo que a Razão inspirada é soberana senhora sobre as paixões e sobre as dores, não só interiores, mas também exteriores a nós mesmos; pela qual aqueles homens, entregando os seus corpos ao tormento por causa da justiça, não apenas alcançaram a admiração da humanidade, mas foram julgados dignos de uma herança divina.

1O Israelites, children born of the seed of Abraham, obey this Law, and be righteous in all ways, recognizing that Inspired Reason is lord over the passions, and over pains, not only from within, but from without ourselves; by which means those men, delivering up their bodies to the torture for righteousness' sake, not only won the admiration of mankind, but were deemed worthy of a divine inheritance.

2E, por meio deles, a nossa nação alcançou a paz, e, restabelecendo a observância da Lei na nossa terra, reconquistou a cidade das mãos do inimigo.

2And through them the nation obtained peace and restoring the observance of the Law in our country hath captured the city from the enemy.

3E a vingança perseguiu na terra o tirano Antíoco, e na morte padece ele castigo.

3And vengeance hath pursued the tyrant Antiochus upon earth, and in death he suffers punishment.

4Pois, havendo falhado de todo em forçar o povo de Jerusalém a viver como os gentios e a abandonar os costumes de nossos pais, retirou-se de Jerusalém e marchou contra os persas.

4For when he failed utterly to constrain the people of Jerusalem to live like Gentiles and abandon the customs of our fathers, he thereupon left Jerusalem and marched away against the Persians.

5E estas são as palavras que a mãe dos sete filhos, mulher justa, dizia aos seus filhos:

5Now these are the words that the mother of the seven sons, the righteous woman, spake to her children:

6Eu era uma donzela pura, e não me desviei da casa de meu pai, mas guardei com zelo a costela que foi edificada para ser Eva.

6'I was a pure maiden, and I strayed not from my father's house, and I kept guard over the rib that was builded into Eve.

7Nenhum sedutor do deserto, nenhum enganador no campo me corrompeu; nem a Serpente falsa e enganadora maculara a pureza da minha virgindade; vivi com meu marido todos os dias da minha mocidade; mas, quando estes meus filhos já eram crescidos, o pai deles faleceu.

7No seducer of the desert, no deceiver in the field, corrupted me; nor did the false, beguiling Serpent sully the purity of my maidenhood; I lived with my husband all the days of my youth; but when these my sons were grown up, their father died.

8Bem-aventurado foi ele; pois viveu uma vida abençoada com filhos, e jamais conheceu a dor de perdê-los.

8Happy was he; for he lived a life blessed with children, and he never knew the pain of their loss.

9O qual, enquanto ainda estava conosco, vos ensinava a Lei e os profetas. Ele nos lia acerca de Abel, que foi morto por Caim; de Isaque, que foi oferecido em holocausto; e de José, lançado no cárcere.

9Who, while he was yet with us, taught you the Law and the prophets. He read to us of Abel who was slain by Cain, and of Isaac who was offered as a burnt-offering, and of Joseph in the prison.

10E falava-nos de Fineias, o sacerdote zeloso, e vos ensinava o cântico de Ananias, Azarias e Misael na fornalha ardente.

10And he spake to us of Phineas, the zealous priest, and he taught you the song of Ananias, Azarias, and Mishael in the fire.

11E exaltava também a Daniel na cova dos leões, e o bendizia; e trazia à vossa memória as palavras de Isaías:

11And he glorified also Daniel in the den of lions, and blessed him; and he called to your minds the saying of Isaiah,

12Ainda que passes pelo fogo, a chama não arderá em ti.

12"Yea even though thou pass through the fire, the flame shall not hurt thee."

13Cantava-nos as palavras de Davi, o salmista: Muitas são as aflições do justo.

13He sang to us the words of David the psalmist, "Many are the afflictions of the just."

14Citava-nos o provérbio de Salomão: Ele é árvore de vida para todos os que cumprem a sua vontade.

14He quoted to us the proverb of Solomon, "He is a tree of life to all them that do his will."

15Confirmava as palavras de Ezequiel: Viverão estes ossos secos? Porque não se esquecia do cântico que Moisés ensinou, o qual declara: Eu matarei e farei viver. Esta é a vossa vida e a bem-aventurança de vossos dias.

15He confirmed the words of Ezekiel, "Shall these dry bones live?" For he forgat not the song that Moses taught, which teaches, "I will slay and I will make alive. This is your life and the blessedness of your days."'

16Ah, cruel foi aquele dia, e contudo não cruel, quando o cruel tirano dos gregos acendeu o fogo abrasador dos seus bárbaros braseiros, e com o furor das suas paixões levou à catapulta e novamente aos seus suplícios os sete filhos da filha de Abraão, e vazou-lhes as meninas dos olhos, e cortou-lhes as línguas, e os matou com múltiplos tormentos!

16Ah, cruel was the day, and yet not cruel, when the cruel tyrant of the Greeks set the fire blazing for his barbarous braziers, and with his passions boiling brought to the catapult and back again to his tortures the seven sons of the daughter of Abraham, and blinded the eyeballs of their eyes, and cut out their tongues, and slew them with many kinds of torment.

17Por cuja causa o juízo de Deus perseguiu, e perseguirá, tão maldito e ímpio perverso.

17For which cause the judgement of God pursued, and shall pursue, the accursed wretch.

18Mas os filhos de Abraão, juntamente com a sua vitoriosa mãe, estão reunidos na morada dos seus antepassados, tendo recebido de Deus almas puras e imortais, a quem seja a glória para todo o sempre.

18But the sons of Abraham, with their victorious mother, are gathered together unto the place of their ancestors, having received pure and immortal souls from God, to whom be glory for ever and ever.
