1 Adão e Eva 4

1Porém, Adão e Eva choraram por haverem saído do jardim, sua primeira morada.

1But Adam and Eve cried for having come out of the garden, their first home.

2E na verdade, quando Adão olhou para a sua carne, que fora mudada, chorou amargamente, ele e Eva, pelo que haviam feito. E caminharam e desceram suavemente à Caverna dos Tesouros.

2And indeed, when Adam looked at his flesh, that was altered, he cried bitterly, he and Eve, over what they had done. And they walked and went gently down into the Cave of Treasures.

3E chegando a ela, Adão pranteou sobre si mesmo e disse a Eva: "Olha para esta caverna, que há de ser a nossa prisão neste mundo e lugar de castigo!

3And as they came to it, Adam cried over himself and said to Eve, "Look at this cave that is to be our prison in this world, and a place of punishment!

4Que é ela em comparação com o jardim? Que é a sua estreiteza em comparação com a amplitude daquele outro?

4What is it compared with the garden? What is its narrowness compared with the space of the other?

5Que é esta rocha ao lado daqueles arvoredos? Que é a escuridão desta caverna em comparação com a luz do jardim?

5What is this rock, by the side of those groves? What is the gloom of this cavern, compared with the light of the garden?

6Que é esta saliência de rocha a nos abrigar, comparada com a misericórdia do Senhor que nos cobria com a Sua sombra?

6What is this overhanging ledge of rock to shelter us, compared with the mercy of the Lord that overshadowed us?

7Que é o chão desta caverna comparado com a terra do jardim? Esta terra juncada de pedras, e aquela plantada de deleitosas árvores frutíferas?"

7What is the soil of this cave compared with the garden land? This earth, strewed with stones; and that, planted with delicious fruit trees?"

8E disse mais Adão a Eva: "Olha para os teus olhos e para os meus, que dantes contemplavam os anjos que louvavam no céu sem cessar.

8And Adam said to Eve, "Look at your eyes, and at mine, which before beheld angels praising in heaven; and they too, without ceasing.

9Agora, porém, não vemos como víamos; nossos olhos tornaram-se de carne; não podem ver como costumavam ver antes."

9But now we do not see as we did; our eyes have become of flesh; they cannot see like they used to see before."

10Disse ainda Adão a Eva: "Que é o nosso corpo hoje, comparado ao que era nos dias passados, quando habitávamos no jardim?"

10Adam said again to Eve, "What is our body today, compared to what it was in former days, when we lived in the garden?"

11Depois disto, não queria Adão entrar na caverna, debaixo da rocha suspensa; nem jamais desejaria entrar nela.

11After this, Adam did not want to enter the cave, under the overhanging rock; nor would he ever want to enter it.

12Mas submeteu-se às ordens de Deus e disse consigo: "Se eu não entrar na caverna, serei de novo transgressor."

12But he bowed to God's orders; and said to himself, "Unless I enter the cave, I shall again be a transgressor."
