Testamento dos 12 Patriarcas 5

1A cópia das palavras de Issacar. Pois ele chamou seus filhos e lhes disse: Ouvi, meus filhos, a Issacar, vosso pai; dai ouvidos às palavras daquele que é amado pelo Senhor.

1The copy of the words of Issachar. For he called his sons and said to them: Hearken, my children, to Issachar your father; Give ear to the words of him who is beloved of the Lord.

2Nasci como o quinto filho de Jacó, em troca das mandrágoras. Pois Rúben, meu irmão, trouxe mandrágoras do campo, e Raquel foi ao seu encontro e as tomou. E Rúben chorou, e ao ouvir sua voz, Lia, minha mãe, saiu. Ora, estas (mandrágoras) eram maçãs de suave fragrância que se produziam na terra de Harã, abaixo de uma ravina de águas.

2I was born the fifth son to Jacob, by way of hire for the mandrakes. For Reuben my brother brought in mandrakes from the field, and Rachel met him and took them. And Reuben wept, and at his voice Leah my mother came forth. Now these (mandrakes) were sweet-smelling apples which were produced in the land of Haran below a ravine of water.

3E Raquel disse: Não as darei a ti, mas serão para mim em lugar de filhos. Pois o Senhor me desprezou, e não dei filhos a Jacó. Havia, então, duas maçãs; e Lia disse a Raquel:

3And Rachel said: I will not give them to thee, but they shall be to me instead of children. For the Lord hath despised me, and I have not borne children to Jacob. Now there were two apples; and Leah said to Rachel:

4Basta-te teres tomado meu marido: tomarás também estas? E Raquel lhe disse: Terás Jacó esta noite pelas mandrágoras de teu filho. E Lia lhe disse:

4Let it suffice thee that thou hast taken my husband: wilt thou take these also? And Rachel said to her: Thou shalt have Jacob this night for the mandrakes of thy son. And Leah said to her:

5Jacó é meu, pois sou a esposa de sua mocidade. Mas Raquel disse: Não te vanglories nem te exaltes; pois ele me desposou antes de ti e, por minha causa, serviu a nosso pai catorze anos.

5Jacob is mine, for I am the wife of his youth. But Rachel said: Boast not, and vaunt not thyself; for he espoused me before thee, and for my sake he served our father fourteen years.

6E, se não tivesse aumentado a astúcia sobre a terra nem prosperado a maldade dos homens, não verias agora o rosto de Jacó.

6And had not craft increased on the earth and the wickedness of men prospered, thou wouldst not now see the face of Jacob.

7Então apareceu a Jacó um anjo do Senhor, dizendo: Dois filhos dará à luz Raquel, visto que recusou a companhia de seu marido e escolheu a continência. E, se Lia, minha mãe, não tivesse pago as duas maçãs para obter a companhia dele, teria dado à luz oito filhos; por isso, ela deu à luz seis, e Raquel, dois: pois, por causa das mandrágoras, o Senhor a visitou.

7Then appeared to Jacob an angel of the Lord, saying: Two children shall Rachel bear, inasmuch as she hath refused company with her husband, and hath chosen continency. And had not Leah my mother paid the two apples for the sake of his company, she would have borne eight sons; for this reason she bare six, and Rachel bare the two: for on account of the mandrakes the Lord visited her.

8Pois Ele sabia que ela desejava unir-se a Jacó por causa dos filhos, e não por desejo de prazer. Também no dia seguinte ela cedeu Jacó novamente. Por causa das mandrágoras, portanto, o Senhor ouviu Raquel. Pois, embora as desejasse, não as comeu, mas as ofereceu na casa do Senhor, apresentando-as ao sacerdote do Altíssimo que ali estava naquele tempo.

8For He knew that for the sake of children she wished to company with Jacob, and not for lust of pleasure. For on the morrow also she again gave up Jacob. Because of the mandrakes; therefore, the Lord hearkened to Rachel. For though she desired them, she eat them not, but offered them in the house of the Lord, presenting them to the priest of the Most High who was at that time.

9Quando, pois, cresci, meus filhos, andei na retidão do coração e me tornei lavrador para meu pai e meus irmãos; e trazia frutos do campo conforme a estação deles. E meu pai me abençoou, pois viu que eu andava em retidão diante dele. E eu não me intrometia em meus afazeres, nem era invejoso ou malicioso para com meu próximo. Nunca difamei ninguém, nem censurei a vida de homem algum, pois andava com simplicidade de olhar.

9When, therefore, I grew up, my children, I walked in uprightness of heart, and I became a husbandman for my father and my brethren, and I brought in fruits from the field according to their season. And my father blessed me, for he saw that I walked in rectitude before him. And I was not a busybody in my doings, nor envious and malicious against my neighbour. I never slandered any one, nor did I censure the life of any man, walking as I did in singleness of eye.

10Portanto, quando tinha trinta e cinco anos, tomei uma esposa, pois meu trabalho consumia minhas forças; e nunca pensei no prazer com mulheres, mas, devido à labuta, o sono me vencia.

10Therefore, when I was thirty-five years old, I took to myself a wife, for my labour wore away my strength, and I never thought upon pleasure with women; but owing to my toil, sleep overcame me.

11E meu pai sempre se alegrava com minha retidão, porque, por meio do sacerdote, eu oferecia ao Senhor todas as primícias; depois, também a meu pai. E o Senhor multiplicou dez mil vezes Seus benefícios em minhas mãos; e Jacó, meu pai, também sabia que Deus amparava minha simplicidade. Pois a todos os pobres e oprimidos eu distribuía os bens da terra na simplicidade de meu coração.

11And my father always rejoiced in my rectitude, because I offered through the priest to the Lord all first-fruits; then to my father also. And the Lord increased ten thousandfold His benefits in my hands; and also Jacob, my father, knew that God aided my singleness. For on all the poor and oppressed I bestowed the good things of the earth in the singleness of my heart.

12E agora, ouvi-me, meus filhos, e andai na simplicidade de vosso coração, pois nela vi tudo o que agrada ao Senhor.

12And now, hearken to me, my children, And walk in singleness of your heart, For I have seen in it all that is well-pleasing to the Lord.

13O homem simples (de mente) não cobiça ouro, não defrauda seu próximo, não anseia por iguarias variadas, nem se deleita em vestes diversas.

13The single-(minded) man coveteth not gold, He overreacheth not his neighbour, He longeth not after manifold dainties, He delighteth not in varied apparel.

14Não deseja viver uma vida longa, mas apenas aguarda a vontade de Deus.

14He doth not desire to live a long life, But only waiteth for the will of God.

15E os espíritos do engano não têm poder contra ele, pois não contempla a beleza das mulheres, para que não corrompa sua mente com a corrupção.

15And the spirits of deceit have no power against him, For he looketh not on the beauty of women, Lest he should pollute his mind with corruption.

16Não há inveja em seus pensamentos; nenhuma pessoa maliciosa faz sua alma definhar, nem a ansiedade por um desejo insaciável perturba sua mente.

16There is no envy in his thoughts, No malicious person maketh his soul to pine away, Nor worry with insatiable desire in his mind.

17Pois ele anda na simplicidade da alma e contempla todas as coisas com retidão de coração, evitando olhos (tornados) maus pelo erro do mundo, para que não veja a perversão de nenhum dos mandamentos do Senhor.

17For he walketh in singleness of soul, And beholdeth all things in uprightness of heart, Shunning eyes (made) evil through the error of the world, Lest he should see the perversion of any of the commandments of the Lord.

18Guardai, portanto, meus filhos, a lei de Deus, adquiri a simplicidade e andai sem dolo, sem vos intrometer nos negócios de vosso próximo, mas amai o Senhor e vosso próximo; tende compaixão dos pobres e dos fracos.

18Keep, therefore, my children, the law of God, And get singleness. And walk in guilelessness, Not playing the busybody with the business of your neighbour, But love the Lord and your neighbour, Have compassion on the poor and weak.

19Curvai as costas para a lavoura e labutai em toda espécie de trabalho agrícola, oferecendo dádivas ao Senhor com ações de graças.

19Bow down your back unto husbandry, And toil in labours in all manner of husbandry, Offering gifts to the Lord with thanksgiving.

20Pois com as primícias da terra o Senhor vos abençoará, assim como abençoou todos os santos desde Abel até agora. Pois nenhuma outra porção vos foi dada senão a fartura da terra, cujos frutos se obtêm pelo trabalho.

20For with the first-fruits of the earth will the Lord bless you, even as He blessed all the saints from Abel even until now. For no other portion is given to you than of the fatness of the earth, whose fruits are raised by toil.

21Pois nosso pai Jacó me abençoou com as bênçãos da terra e das primícias. E Levi e Judá foram glorificados pelo Senhor até mesmo entre os filhos de Jacó; pois o Senhor lhes deu uma herança: a Levi, o sacerdócio, e a Judá, o reino.

21For our father Jacob blessed me with blessings of the earth and of first-fruits. And Levi and Judah were glorified by the Lord even among the sons of Jacob; for the Lord gave them an inheritance, and to Levi He gave the priesthood, and to Judah the kingdom.

22Obedecei-lhes, portanto, e andai na simplicidade de vosso pai; pois a Gade foi dado destruir as tropas que vêm contra Israel.

22And do ye therefore obey them, and walk in the singleness of your father; for unto Gad hath it been given to destroy the troops that are coming upon Israel.

23Sabei, portanto, meus filhos, que nos últimos tempos vossos filhos abandonarão a simplicidade e se apegarão ao desejo insaciável; deixando a ausência de dolo, aproximar-se-ão da malícia; e, abandonando os mandamentos do Senhor, apegar-se-ão a Beliar.

23Know ye therefore, my children, that in the last times Your sons will forsake singleness, And will cleave unto insatiable desire; And leaving guilelessness will draw near to malice; And forsaking the commandments of the Lord, They will cleave unto Beliar.

24E, deixando a lavoura, seguirão seus próprios desígnios perversos, serão dispersos entre os gentios e servirão a seus inimigos.

24And leaving husbandry, They will follow after their own wicked devices, And they shall be dispersed among the Gentiles. And shall serve their enemies.

25Dai, portanto, estes mandamentos a vossos filhos para que, se pecarem, possam mais depressa voltar ao Senhor; pois Ele é misericordioso e os libertará, fazendo-os regressar à sua terra.

25And do you therefore give these commands to your children, that, if they sin, they may the more quickly return to the Lord; For He is merciful, and will deliver them, even to bring them back into their land.

26Eis que, como vedes, tenho cento e vinte e seis anos e não tenho consciência de haver cometido pecado algum.

26Behold, therefore, as ye see, I am a hundred and twenty-six years old and am not conscious of committing any sin.

27Exceto minha esposa, não conheci mulher alguma. Nunca cometi fornicação erguendo os olhos.

27Except my wife I have not known any woman. I never committed fornication by the uplifting of my eyes.

28Não bebi vinho a ponto de ser desencaminhado por ele; não cobicei coisa desejável alguma que pertencesse a meu próximo.

28I drank not wine, to be led astray thereby; I coveted not any desirable thing that was my neighbour's.

29O dolo não surgiu em meu coração; mentira alguma passou por meus lábios.

29Guile arose not in my heart; A lie passed not through my lips.

30Se algum homem estivesse aflito, eu unia meus suspiros aos dele e repartia meu pão com os pobres. Pratiquei a piedade; todos os meus dias guardei a verdade. Amei o Senhor; igualmente, também amei cada homem de todo o coração.

30If any man were in distress I joined my sighs with his, And I shared my bread with the poor. I wrought godliness, all my days I kept truth I loved the Lord; Likewise also every man with all my heart.

31Fazei vós também estas coisas, meus filhos, e todo espírito de Beliar fugirá de vós, e nenhuma ação dos homens perversos vos dominará; e subjugareis toda fera selvagem, pois tendes convosco o Deus do céu e da terra (e) andais entre os homens com simplicidade de coração.

31So do you also these things, my children, And every spirit of Beliar shall flee from you, And no deed of wicked men shall rule over you; And every wild beast shall ye subdue, Since you have with you the God of heaven and earth (And) walk with men in singleness of heart.

32E, tendo dito estas coisas, ordenou a seus filhos que o levassem a Hebrom e o sepultassem ali na caverna com seus pais. E estendeu os pés e morreu em boa velhice; com todos os membros sãos e o vigor inabalado, dormiu o sono eterno.

32And having said these things, he commanded his sons that they should carry him up to Hebron, and bury him there in the cave with his fathers. And he stretched out his feet and died, at a good old age; with every limb sound, and with strength unabated, he slept the eternal sleep.
