Testamento dos 12 Patriarcas 9

1A cópia do testamento de Gade, as coisas que ele falou a seus filhos, no centésimo vigésimo quinto ano de sua vida, dizendo-lhes: Ouvi, meus filhos; eu fui o nono filho nascido de Jacó, e fui valente no pastoreio dos rebanhos.

1The copy of the testament of Gad, what things he spake unto his sons, in the hundred and twenty fifth year of his life, saying unto them: Hearken, my children, I was the ninth son born to Jacob, and I was valiant in keeping the flocks.

2Por conseguinte, guardava à noite o rebanho; e sempre que vinha o leão, ou o lobo, ou qualquer fera contra o curral, eu a perseguia, e alcançando (a fera), agarrava sua pata com a mão e a arremessava à distância de um tiro de pedra, e assim a matava.

2Accordingly I guarded at night the flock; and whenever the lion came, or the wolf, or any wild beast against the fold, I pursued it, and overtaking (it) I seized its foot with my hand and hurled it about a stone's throw, and so killed it.

3Ora, José, meu irmão, apascentava o rebanho conosco por mais de trinta dias, e sendo jovem, adoeceu por causa do calor. E voltou a Hebrom para nosso pai, que o fez deitar-se junto a si, porque o amava grandemente.

3Now Joseph my brother was feeding the flock with us for upwards of thirty days, and being young, he fell sick by reason of the heat. And he returned to Hebron to our father, who made him lie down near him, because he loved him greatly.

4E José disse a nosso pai que os filhos de Zilpa e de Bila estavam matando o melhor do rebanho e comendo-o, contra o parecer de Rúben e de Judá.

4And Joseph told our father that the sons of Zilpah and Bilhah were slaying the best of the flock and eating them against the judgement of Reuben and Judah.

5Pois ele viu que eu havia livrado um cordeiro da boca de um urso e matado o urso; mas havia degolado o cordeiro, entristecido por causa dele por não poder viver, e que o havíamos comido. E por causa deste assunto irritei-me com José até o dia em que ele foi vendido. E o espírito de ódio estava em mim, e eu não queria ouvir falar de José com os ouvidos, nem vê-lo com os olhos, porque ele nos repreendera em nossas faces, dizendo que estávamos comendo do rebanho sem Judá. Pois tudo o que ele dizia a nosso pai, este acreditava nele.

5For he saw that I had delivered a lamb out of the mouth of a bear, and put the bear to death; but had slain the lamb, being grieved concerning it that it could not live, and that we had eaten it. And regarding this matter I was wroth with Joseph until the day that he was sold, And the spirit of hatred was in me, and I wished not either to hear of Joseph with the ears, or see him with the eyes because he rebuked us to our faces saying that we were eating of the flock without Judah. For whatsoever things he told our father, he believed him.

6Confesso agora o meu pecado, meus filhos: que muitas vezes desejei matá-lo, porque o odiava do fundo do meu coração. Ademais, odiava-o ainda mais pelos seus sonhos; e desejei lambê-lo para fora da terra dos viventes, assim como o boi lambe a erva do campo.

6I confess now my sin, my children, that oftentimes I wished to kill him, because I hated him from my heart. Moreover, I hated him yet more for his dreams; and I wished to lick him out of the land of the living, even as an ox licketh up the grass of the field.

7Por isso eu e Simeão o vendemos aos ismaelitas por trinta moedas de ouro, e dez delas ocultamos, e mostramos as vinte a nossos irmãos. E assim, por cobiça, estávamos obstinados em matá-lo.

7Therefore I and Simeon sold him to the Ishmaelites for thirty pieces of gold, and ten of them we hid, and showed the twenty to our brethren And thus through covetousness we were bent on slaying him.

8Mas o Deus de meus pais livrou-o de minhas mãos, para que eu não cometesse iniquidade em Israel.

8And the God of my fathers delivered him from my hands, that I should not work lawlessness in Israel.

9E agora, meus filhos, ouvi as palavras da verdade para praticardes a justiça e toda a lei do Altíssimo, e não vos desvieis pelo espírito de ódio, pois ele é mau em todas as ações dos homens. Tudo o que um homem faz, o odiador o abomina; e ainda que um homem cumpra a lei do Senhor, ele não o louva; ainda que um homem tema ao Senhor e se deleite no que é justo, ele não o ama.

9And now, my children, hearken to the words of truth to work righteousness, and all the law of the Most High, and go not astray through the spirit of hatred, for it is evil in all the doings of men. Whatsoever a man doeth the hater abominateth him: and though a man worketh the law of the Lord, he praiseth him not; though a man feareth the Lord, and taketh pleasure in that which is righteous, he loveth him not.

10Ele deprecia a verdade, tem inveja do que prospera, acolhe a maledicência, ama a arrogância, pois o ódio cega a sua alma; como eu também então olhava para José.

10He dispraiseth the truth, he envieth him that prospereth, he welcometh evil-speaking, he loveth arrogance, for hatred blindeth his soul; as I also then looked on Joseph.

11Guardai-vos, pois, meus filhos, do ódio; pois ele opera iniquidade até contra o próprio Senhor.

11Beware, therefore, my children of hatred; for it worketh lawlessness even against the Lord Himself.

12Pois não quer ouvir as palavras dos Seus mandamentos a respeito do amor ao próximo, e peca contra Deus. Pois se um irmão tropeça, ele se deleita imediatamente em proclamá-lo a todos os homens, e insiste para que seja julgado por isso, e seja punido e morto.

12For it will not hear the words of His commandments concerning the loving of one's neighbour, and it sinneth against God. For if a brother stumble, it delighteth immediately to proclaim it to all men, and is urgent that he should be judged for it, and be punished and be put to death.

13E se for um servo, ele o instiga contra o seu senhor, e com toda aflição maquina contra ele, se for possível matá-lo. Pois o ódio opera com a inveja também contra os que prosperam: enquanto ouve ou vê o seu êxito, definha continuamente.

13And if it be a servant it stirreth him up against his master, and with every affliction it deviseth against him if possibly he can be put to death, For hatred worketh with envy also against them that prosper: so long as it heareth of or seeth their success, it always languisheth.

14Pois assim como o amor vivificaria até os mortos e chamaria de volta os que estão condenados a morrer, assim o ódio mataria os vivos, e aqueles que pecaram venialmente ele não permitiria viver.

14For as love would quicken even the dead, and would call back them that are condemned to die, so hatred would slay the living, and those that had sinned venially it would not suffer to live.

15Pois o espírito de ódio opera juntamente com Satanás, pela precipitação de espírito, em todas as coisas para a morte dos homens; mas o espírito de amor opera juntamente com a lei de Deus em longanimidade para a salvação dos homens.

15For the spirit of hatred worketh together with Satan, through hastiness of spirit, in all things to men's death; but the spirit of love worketh together with the law of God in long-suffering unto the salvation of men.

16O ódio, portanto, é mau, pois se une constantemente com a mentira, falando contra a verdade; e faz com que as coisas pequenas sejam grandes, e faz com que a luz seja trevas, e chama o doce de amargo, e ensina a calúnia, e acende a ira, e incita a guerra, a violência e toda cobiça;

16Hatred, therefore, is evil, for it constantly mateth with lying, speaking against the truth; and it maketh small things to be great, and causeth the light to be darkness, and calleth the sweet bitter, and teacheth slander, and kindleth wrath, and stirreth up war, and violence and all covetousness;

17enche o coração de males e de veneno diabólico. Estas coisas, pois, digo-vos por experiência, meus filhos, para que expulseis o ódio, que é do diabo, e vos apegueis ao amor de Deus. A justiça expulsa o ódio, a humildade destrói a inveja. Pois aquele que é justo e humilde se envergonha de fazer o que é injusto, sendo repreendido não por outrem, mas pelo seu próprio coração, porque o Senhor contempla a sua inclinação. Ele não fala contra um homem santo, porque o temor de Deus vence o ódio. Pois temendo ofender ao Senhor, não fará mal a nenhum homem, nem sequer em pensamento. Estas coisas aprendi por fim, depois que me arrependi a respeito de José. Pois o verdadeiro arrependimento segundo Deus destrói a ignorância, e dissipa as trevas, e ilumina os olhos, e dá conhecimento à alma, e conduz a mente à salvação. E aquelas coisas que não aprendeu do homem, conhece-as mediante o arrependimento. Pois Deus trouxe sobre mim uma enfermidade do fígado; e se as orações de Jacó, meu pai, não me tivessem socorrido, bem pouco teria faltado para que o meu espírito tivesse partido. Pois naquilo em que o homem transgride, nisso mesmo é ele castigado. Visto que, portanto, o meu fígado se dispôs sem misericórdia contra José, no meu fígado também sofri sem misericórdia, e fui julgado por onze meses, por tanto tempo quanto me irritei contra José.

17it filleth the heart with evils and devilish poison. These things, therefore, I say to you from experience, my children, that ye may drive forth hatred, which is of the devil, and cleave to the love of God. Righteousness casteth out hatred, humility destroyeth envy. For he that is just and humble is ashamed to do what is unjust, being reproved not of another, but of his own heart, because the Lord looketh on his inclination. He speaketh not against a holy man, because the fear of God overcometh hatred. For fearing lest he should offend the Lord, he will not do wrong to any man, even in thought. These things I learnt at last, after I had repented concerning Joseph. For true repentance after a godly sort destroyeth ignorance, and driveth away the darkness, and enlighteneth the eyes, and giveth knowledge to the soul, and leadeth the mind to salvation. And those things which it hath not learnt from man, it knoweth through repentance. For God brought upon me a disease of the liver; and had not the prayers of Jacob my father succoured me, it had hardly failed but my spirit had departed, For by what things a man transgresseth, by the same also is he punished. Since, therefore, my liver was set mercilessly against Joseph, in my liver too I suffered mercilessly, and was judged for eleven months, for so long a time as I had been angry against Joseph.

18E agora, meus filhos, exorto-vos: amai cada um ao seu irmão, e lançai fora o ódio de vossos corações; amai-vos uns aos outros em obras, em palavras e na inclinação da alma. Pois na presença de meu pai eu falava pacificamente a José; e quando eu saía, o espírito de ódio escurecia a minha mente e incitava a minha alma a matá-lo.

18And now, my children, I exhort you, love ye each one his brother, and put away hatred from your hearts, love one another in deed, and in word, and in the inclination of the soul. For in the presence of my father I spake peaceably to Joseph; and when I had gone out, the spirit of hatred darkened my mind, and stirred up my soul to slay him.

19Amai-vos, pois, uns aos outros de coração; e se alguém pecar contra ti, deita fora o veneno do ódio e fala-lhe em paz, e em tua alma não guardes engano; e se ele confessar e se arrepender, perdoa-lhe.

19Love ye, therefore, one another from the heart; and if a man sin against thee, cast forth the poison of hate and speak peaceably to him, and in thy soul hold not guile; and if he confess and repent, forgive him.

20Mas se ele o negar, não te enfureças com ele, para não suceder que, apanhando o veneno de ti, ele se ponha a jurar e assim peques duplamente. Não ouça outro homem os teus segredos quando estiveres em litígio judicial, para que não venha a odiar-te e se torne teu inimigo, e cometa grande pecado contra ti; pois muitas vezes ele se dirige a ti com dolo ou se ocupa acerca de ti com má intenção. E ainda que ele o negue e contudo sinta vergonha ao ser repreendido, cessa de o repreender. Pois aquele que nega pode arrepender-se de modo a não mais te ofender; sim, ele pode também honrar-te, e temer, e estar em paz contigo. E se for desavergonhado e persistir em sua maldade, ainda assim perdoa-lhe de coração, e deixa a Deus a vingança.

20But if he deny it, do not get into a passion with him, lest catching the poison from thee he take to swearing and so thou sin doubly. Let not another man hear thy secrets when engaged in legal strife, lest he come to hate thee and become thy enemy, and commit a great sin against thee; for ofttimes he addresseth thee guilefully or busieth himself about thee with wicked intent. And though he deny it and yet have a sense of shame when reproved, give over reproving him. For he who denieth may repent so as not again to wrong thee; yea, he may also honour thee, and fear and be at peace with thee And if he be shameless and persist in his wrong-doing, even so forgive him from the heart, and leave to God the avenging.

21Se um homem prosperar mais do que vós, não vos desgosteis, mas orai também por ele, para que tenha perfeita prosperidade. Pois assim vos é conveniente. E se for ainda mais exaltado, não tenhais inveja dele, lembrando-vos de que toda a carne morrerá; e dai louvor a Deus, que dá coisas boas e proveitosas a todos os homens. Investigai os juízos do Senhor, e a vossa mente repousará e estará em paz.

21If a man prospereth more than you, do not be vexed, but pray also for him, that he may have perfect prosperity. For so it is expedient for you. And if he be further exalted, be not envious of him, remembering that all flesh shall die; and offer praise to God, who giveth things good and profitable to all men. Seek out the judgements of the Lord, and thy mind will rest and be at peace.

22E ainda que um homem se torne rico por meios maus, assim como Esaú, irmão de meu pai, não tenhais ciúme;

22And though a man become rich by evil means, even as Esau, the brother of my father, be not jealous;

23mas esperai o fim do Senhor. Pois se Ele tira (de um homem) a riqueza adquirida por maus meios, perdoa-lhe se ele se arrepender, mas o impenitente é reservado para o castigo eterno. Pois o homem pobre, se livre de inveja agrada ao Senhor em todas as coisas, é abençoado além de todos os homens, porque ele não tem as fadigas dos homens vãos. Lançai fora, portanto, o ciúme de vossas almas, e amai-vos uns aos outros com retidão de coração.

23but wait for the end of the Lord. For if he taketh away (from a man) wealth gotten by evil means He forgiveth him if he repent, but the unrepentant is reserved for eternal punishment. For the poor man, if free from envy he pleaseth the Lord in all things, is blessed beyond all men, because he hath not the travail of vain men. Put away, therefore, jealousy from your souls, and love one another with uprightness of heart.

24Dizei também vós estas coisas aos vossos filhos, para que honrem a Judá e a Levi, pois deles suscitará o Senhor salvação para Israel. Pois eu sei que no fim os vossos filhos se apartarão d'Ele, e andarão em toda a perversidade, aflição e corrupção diante do Senhor.

24Do ye also therefore tell these things to your children, that they honour Judah and Levi, for from them shall the Lord raise up salvation to Israel. For I know that at the last your children shall depart from Him, and shall walk in all wickedness, and affliction and corruption before the Lord.

25E tendo descansado por um pouco, disse novamente: Meus filhos, obedecei a vosso pai, e sepultai-me junto aos meus pais. E recolheu os seus pés e adormeceu em paz. E passados cinco anos levaram-no para Hebrom, e o deitaram com seus pais.

25And when he had rested for a little while, he said again; My children, obey your father, and bury me near to my fathers. And he drew up his feet, and fell asleep in peace. And after five years they carried him up to Hebron, and laid him with his fathers.
