Eclesiástico 11

1A sabedoria levanta a cabeça do humilde e o faz sentar-se entre os grandes.

1Wisdom lifteth up the head of him that is of low degree, and maketh him to sit among great men.

2Não louves um homem pela sua formosura, nem aborreças um homem pela sua aparência.

2Commend not a man for his beauty; neither abhor a man for his outward appearance.

3A abelha é pequena entre os que voam, mas o seu fruto é o primeiro das doçuras.

3The bee is little among such as fly; but her fruit is the chief of sweet things.

4Não te gabes das tuas vestes e roupas, e não te exaltes no dia da honra; pois as obras do Senhor são maravilhosas, e as suas obras entre os homens estão ocultas.

4Boast not of thy clothing and raiment, and exalt not thyself in the day of honour: for the works of the Lord are wonderful, and his works among men are hidden.

5Muitos reis se assentaram no chão, e um em quem nunca se pensara usou a coroa.

5Many kings have sat down upon the ground; and one that was never thought of hath worn the crown.

6Muitos poderosos foram grandemente desonrados, e os honrados foram entregues nas mãos de outros.

6Many mighty men have been greatly disgraced; and the honourable delivered into other men’s hands.

7Não censures antes de teres examinado a verdade; entende primeiro, e depois repreende.

7Blame not before thou hast examined the truth: understand first, and then rebuke.

8Não respondas antes de teres ouvido a causa, nem interrompas os homens no meio da sua fala.

8Answer not before thou hast heard the cause: neither interrupt men in the midst of their talk.

9Não contendas em assunto que não te diz respeito, e não te assentes em juízo com os pecadores.

9Strive not in a matter that concerneth thee not; and sit not in judgment with sinners.

10Meu filho, não te metas em muitos negócios; pois, se te meteres em muitos, não ficarás sem culpa; e, se os perseguires, não os alcançarás, nem escaparás fugindo.

10My son, meddle not with many matters: for if thou meddle much, thou shalt not be innocent; and if thou follow after, thou shalt not obtain, neither shalt thou escape by fleeing.

11Há quem trabalhe, e se esforce, e se apresse, e tanto mais fique para trás.

11There is one that laboureth, and taketh pains, and maketh haste, and is so much the more behind.

12Há também outro que é lento e precisa de ajuda, falto de forças e cheio de pobreza; contudo, o olho do Senhor olhou para ele para o bem e o levantou da sua humilhação,

12Again, there is another that is slow, and hath need of help, wanting ability, and full of poverty; yet the eye of the Lord looked upon him for good, and set him up from his low estate,

13e ergueu a sua cabeça da miséria; de modo que muitos que o viram se maravilharam dele.

13And lifted up his head from misery; so that many that saw it marvelled at him.

14A prosperidade e a adversidade, a vida e a morte, a pobreza e a riqueza vêm do Senhor.

14Prosperity and adversity, life and death, poverty and riches, come of the Lord.

15A sabedoria, o conhecimento e o entendimento da lei vêm do Senhor; o amor e o caminho das boas obras vêm dele.

15Wisdom, knowledge, and understanding of the law, are of the Lord: love, and the way of good works, are from him.

16O erro e as trevas tiveram o seu princípio juntamente com os pecadores, e o mal envelhecerá com os que nele se gloriam.

16Error and darkness had their beginning together with sinners: and evil shall wax old with them that glory therein.

17O dom do Senhor permanece com os piedosos, e o seu favor traz prosperidade para sempre.

17The gift of the Lord remaineth with the godly, and his favour bringeth prosperity for ever.

18Há quem se enriqueça pela sua cautela e mesquinhez, e esta é a porção da sua recompensa:

18There is that waxeth rich by his wariness and pinching, and this is the portion of his reward:

19quando diz: Achei descanso, e agora comerei continuamente dos meus bens; e não sabe que tempo lhe sobrevirá, e que deverá deixar essas coisas a outros e morrer.

19Whereas he saith, I have found rest, and now will eat continually of my goods; and yet he knoweth not what time shall come upon him, and that he must leave those things to others, and die.

20Sê firme na tua aliança, e ocupa-te dela, e envelhece na tua obra.

20Be stedfast in thy covenant, and be conversant therein, and wax old in thy work.

21Não te maravilhes das obras dos pecadores; mas confia no Senhor e persevera no teu trabalho; pois é coisa fácil aos olhos do Senhor tornar rico, de repente, o pobre.

21Marvel not at the works of sinners; but trust in the Lord, and abide in thy labour: for it is an easy thing in the sight of the Lord on the sudden to make a poor man rich.

22A bênção do Senhor está na recompensa dos piedosos, e de repente ele faz florescer a sua bênção.

22The blessing of the Lord is in the reward of the godly, and suddenly he maketh his blessing flourish.

23Não digas: Que proveito tenho do meu serviço? E que bens terei daqui em diante?

23Say not, What profit is there of my service? and what good things shall I have hereafter?

24E também não digas: Tenho o bastante e possuo muitas coisas; que mal me sobrevirá daqui em diante?

24Again, say not, I have enough, and possess many things, and what evil shall I have hereafter?

25No dia da prosperidade esquece-se a aflição, e no dia da aflição não se lembra mais da prosperidade.

25In the day of prosperity there is a forgetfulness of affliction: and in the day of affliction there is no more remembrance of prosperity.

26Pois é coisa fácil ao Senhor, no dia da morte, recompensar o homem segundo os seus caminhos.

26For it is an easy thing unto the Lord in the day of death to reward a man according to his ways.

27A aflição de uma hora faz esquecer o prazer, e no seu fim serão descobertas as suas obras.

27The affliction of an hour maketh a man forget pleasure: and in his end his deeds shall be discovered.

28Não chames feliz a ninguém antes da sua morte; pois o homem será conhecido nos seus filhos.

28Judge none blessed before his death: for a man shall be known in his children.

29Não metas todo homem na tua casa; pois o enganador tem muitas ciladas.

29Bring not every man into thine house: for the deceitful man hath many trains.

30Como a perdiz presa e guardada numa gaiola, assim é o coração do soberbo; e, como um espia, ele vigia a tua queda;

30Like as a partridge taken and kept in a cage, so is the heart of the proud; and like as a spy, watcheth he for thy fall:

31pois arma ciladas, e converte o bem em mal, e nas coisas dignas de louvor lançará culpa sobre ti.

31For he lieth in wait, and turneth good into evil, and in things worthy praise will lay blame upon thee.

32De uma faísca de fogo se acende um montão de brasas, e o homem pecador arma ciladas para derramar sangue.

32Of a spark of fire a heap of coals is kindled: and a sinful man layeth wait for blood.

33Guarda-te do homem malfeitor, pois ele trama a maldade, para que não traga sobre ti uma mancha perpétua.

33Take heed of a mischievous man, for he worketh wickedness; lest he bring upon thee a perpetual blot.

34Recebe um estranho em tua casa, e ele te perturbará e te lançará fora da tua própria casa.

34Receive a stranger into thine house, and he will disturb thee, and turn thee out of thine own.
