1A vigília pelas riquezas consome a carne, e a sua preocupação afugenta o sono.

1Watching for riches consumeth the flesh, and the care thereof driveth away sleep.

2O cuidado vigilante não deixa o homem dormir, assim como uma doença grave quebra o sono.

2Watching care will not let a man slumber, as a sore disease breaketh sleep.

3O rico tem grande trabalho em ajuntar riquezas; e, quando descansa, farta-se das suas delícias.

3The rich hath great labour in gathering riches together; and when he resteth, he is filled with his delicates.

4O pobre trabalha na sua pobre condição; e, quando para, continua necessitado.

4The poor laboureth in his poor estate; and when he leaveth off, he is still needy.

5Quem ama o ouro não será justificado, e quem segue a corrupção terá dela bastante.

5He that loveth gold shall not be justified, and he that followeth corruption shall have enough thereof.

6O ouro foi a ruína de muitos, e a sua destruição estava presente.

6Gold hath been the ruin of many, and their destruction was present.

7É pedra de tropeço para os que lhe sacrificam, e todo insensato será apanhado por ele.

7It is a stumblingblock unto them that sacrifice unto it, and every fool shall be taken therewith.

8Bem-aventurado o rico que é achado sem mancha e não andou atrás do ouro.

8Blessed is the rich that is found without blemish, and hath not gone after gold.

9Quem é ele? E o chamaremos bem-aventurado; pois fez coisas maravilhosas no meio do seu povo.

9Who is he? and we will call him blessed: for wonderful things hath he done among his people.

10Quem foi provado por ele e achado perfeito? Então que se glorie. Quem podia pecar e não pecou? Ou fazer o mal e não o fez?

10Who hath been tried thereby, and found perfect? then let him glory. Who might offend, and hath not offended? or done evil, and hath not done it?

11Os seus bens serão estabelecidos, e a congregação anunciará as suas esmolas.

11His goods shall be established, and the congregation shall declare his alms.

12Se te assentares a uma mesa farta, não sejas guloso diante dela, e não digas: Muita comida há sobre ela.

12If thou sit at a bountiful table, be not greedy upon it, and say not, There is much meat on it.

13Lembra-te de que o olho mau é coisa má; e que coisa foi criada mais perversa do que o olho? Por isso chora em toda ocasião.

13Remember that a wicked eye is an evil thing: and what is created more wicked than an eye? therefore it weepeth upon every occasion.

14Não estendas a mão para onde quer que ele olhe, e não a metas com ele no prato.

14Stretch not thine hand whithersoever it looketh, and thrust it not with him into the dish.

15Não julgues o teu próximo por ti mesmo, e sê discreto em todas as coisas.

15Judge not thy neighbour by thyself: and be discreet in every point.

16Come, como convém a um homem, as coisas que te são postas diante, e não devores, para que não sejas odiado.

16Eat as it becometh a man, those things which are set before thee; and devour not, lest thou be hated.

17Para primeiro por boa educação, e não sejas insaciável, para que não ofendas.

17Leave off first for manners’ sake; and be not unsatiable, lest thou offend.

18Quando te assentares entre muitos, não estendas a mão antes de todos.

18When thou sittest among many, reach not thine hand out first of all.

19Muito pouco basta ao homem bem educado, e ele não respira ofegante na sua cama.

19A very little is sufficient for a man well nurtured, and he fetcheth not his wind short upon his bed.

20O sono sadio vem do comer moderado; levanta-se cedo e tem o juízo consigo; mas a pena da vigília, e a cólera, e as dores do ventre estão com o homem insaciável.

20Sound sleep cometh of moderate eating: he riseth early, and his wits are with him: but the pain of watching, and choler, and pangs of the belly, are with an unsatiable man.

21E, se foste forçado a comer, levanta-te, sai, vomita, e terás descanso.

21And if thou hast been forced to eat, arise, go forth, vomit, and thou shalt have rest.

22Meu filho, ouve-me e não me desprezes, e no fim acharás como eu te disse: em todas as tuas obras sê diligente, e assim nenhuma doença virá sobre ti.

22My son, hear me, and despise me not, and at the last thou shalt find as I told thee: in all thy works be quick, so shall there no sickness come unto thee.

23De quem é generoso com a sua comida os homens falarão bem, e o testemunho da sua boa hospitalidade será crido.

23Whoso is liberal of his meat, men shall speak well of him; and the report of his good housekeeping will be believed.

24Mas contra quem é mesquinho com a sua comida toda a cidade murmurará, e dos testemunhos da sua mesquinhez não se duvidará.

24But against him that is a niggard of his meat the whole city shall murmur; and the testimonies of his niggardness shall not be doubted of.

25Não mostres a tua valentia no vinho, pois o vinho destruiu a muitos.

25Shew not thy valiantness in wine; for wine hath destroyed many.

26A fornalha prova o fio do aço pela têmpera; assim o vinho prova os corações dos soberbos pela embriaguez.

26The furnace proveth the edge by dipping: so doth wine the hearts of the proud by drunkenness.

27O vinho é tão bom como a vida para o homem, se for bebido com moderação; que vida tem, pois, o homem que está sem vinho? Pois foi feito para alegrar os homens.

27Wine is as good as life to a man, if it be drunk moderately: what life is then to a man that is without wine? for it was made to make men glad.

28O vinho bebido com medida e a seu tempo traz alegria ao coração e contentamento ao ânimo;

28Wine measurably drunk and in season bringeth gladness of the heart, and cheerfulness of the mind:

29mas o vinho bebido com excesso produz amargura do ânimo, com rixas e contendas.

29But wine drunken with excess maketh bitterness of the mind, with brawling and quarrelling.

30A embriaguez aumenta a fúria do insensato até que ele ofenda; diminui a força e causa feridas.

30Drunkenness increaseth the rage of a fool till he offend: it diminisheth strength, and maketh wounds.

31Não repreendas o teu próximo no banquete de vinho, nem o desprezes na sua alegria; não lhe digas palavras afrontosas, nem o apertes instando com ele para beber.

31Rebuke not thy neighbour at the wine, and despise him not in his mirth: give him no despiteful words, and press not upon him with urging him to drink.
