Eclesiástico 38

1Honra o médico com a honra que lhe é devida, pelo proveito que dele podeis ter; pois o Senhor o criou.

1Honour a physician with the honour due unto him for the uses which ye may have of him: for the Lord hath created him.

2Pois do Altíssimo vem a cura, e ele receberá honra do rei.

2For of the most High cometh healing, and he shall receive honour of the king.

3A ciência do médico lhe levantará a cabeça, e diante dos grandes ele será admirado.

3The skill of the physician shall lift up his head: and in the sight of great men he shall be in admiration.

4O Senhor criou da terra os remédios, e quem é sábio não os desprezará.

4The Lord hath created medicines out of the earth; and he that is wise will not abhor them.

5Não foi a água adoçada com um lenho, para que se conhecesse a sua virtude?

5Was not the water made sweet with wood, that the virtue thereof might be known?

6E ele deu ciência aos homens, para que fosse honrado nas suas obras maravilhosas.

6And he hath given men skill, that he might be honoured in his marvellous works.

7Com tais coisas ele cura os homens e lhes tira as dores.

7With such doth he heal men, and taketh away their pains.

8Delas o boticário faz uma confecção; e das suas obras não há fim; e dele vem a paz sobre toda a terra.

8Of such doth the apothecary make a confection; and of his works there is no end; and from him is peace over all the earth.

9Meu filho, na tua doença não sejas negligente, mas ora ao Senhor, e ele te sarará.

9My son, in thy sickness be not negligent: but pray unto the Lord, and he will make thee whole.

10Deixa o pecado, e ordena retamente as tuas mãos, e purifica o teu coração de toda maldade.

10Leave off from sin, and order thine hands aright, and cleanse thy heart from all wickedness.

11Dá um cheiro suave e um memorial de flor de farinha, e faze uma oferta gorda, como quem já não existe.

11Give a sweet savour, and a memorial of fine flour; and make a fat offering, as not being.

12Então dá lugar ao médico, pois o Senhor o criou; não se aparte ele de ti, pois tens necessidade dele.

12Then give place to the physician, for the Lord hath created him: let him not go from thee, for thou hast need of him.

13Há tempo em que nas mãos deles há bom sucesso.

13There is a time when in their hands there is good success.

14Pois também eles orarão ao Senhor, para que faça prosperar aquilo que dão para alívio e remédio, a fim de prolongar a vida.

14For they shall also pray unto the Lord, that he would prosper that, which they give for ease and remedy to prolong life.

15Quem peca diante do seu Criador caia nas mãos do médico.

15He that sinneth before his Maker, let him fall into the hand of the physician.

16Meu filho, derrama lágrimas sobre o morto, e começa a lamentar, como se tu mesmo tivesses sofrido grande dano; e depois cobre o seu corpo segundo o costume, e não descuides da sua sepultura.

16My son, let tears fall down over the dead, and begin to lament, as if thou hadst suffered great harm thyself; and then cover his body according to the custom, and neglect not his burial.

17Chora amargamente, e faze grande pranto, e usa de lamentação, como ele é digno, e isto por um dia ou dois, para que não se fale mal de ti; e depois consola-te da tua tristeza.

17Weep bitterly, and make great moan, and use lamentation, as he is worthy, and that a day or two, lest thou be evil spoken of: and then comfort thyself for thy heaviness.

18Pois da tristeza vem a morte, e a tristeza do coração quebranta a força.

18For of heaviness cometh death, and the heaviness of the heart breaketh strength.

19Na aflição também permanece a dor; e a vida do pobre é a maldição do coração.

19In affliction also sorrow remaineth: and the life of the poor is the curse of the heart.

20Não tomes tristeza a peito; afasta-a, e lembra-te do fim derradeiro.

20Take no heaviness to heart: drive it away, and remember the last end.

21Não te esqueças disto, pois não há volta; a ele não farás bem, e a ti mesmo farás mal.

21Forget it not, for there is no turning again: thou shalt not do him good, but hurt thyself.

22Lembra-te da minha sentença, pois a tua também será assim: ontem para mim, e hoje para ti.

22Remember my judgment: for thine also shall be so; yesterday for me, and to day for thee.

23Quando o morto está em repouso, deixa repousar a sua memória, e consola-te por ele, quando o seu espírito se tiver apartado dele.

23When the dead is at rest, let his remembrance rest; and be comforted for him, when his Spirit is departed from him.

24A sabedoria do homem douto vem pela oportunidade do ócio; e quem tem poucos negócios se tornará sábio.

24The wisdom of a learned man cometh by opportunity of leisure: and he that hath little business shall become wise.

25Como pode adquirir sabedoria aquele que segura o arado e se gloria no aguilhão, que toca os bois e se ocupa nos seus trabalhos, e cuja conversa é de novilhos?

25How can he get wisdom that holdeth the plough, and that glorieth in the goad, that driveth oxen, and is occupied in their labours, and whose talk is of bullocks?

26Ele dá o seu ânimo a fazer sulcos, e é diligente em dar forragem às vacas.

26He giveth his mind to make furrows; and is diligent to give the kine fodder.

27Assim todo carpinteiro e mestre de obras, que trabalha de noite e de dia; e os que cortam e gravam sinetes, e são diligentes em fazer grande variedade, e se dão a imitar figuras, e velam para acabar uma obra;

27So every carpenter and workmaster, that laboureth night and day: and they that cut and grave seals, and are diligent to make great variety, and give themselves to counterfeit imagery, and watch to finish a work:

28também o ferreiro, sentado junto à bigorna e considerando a obra do ferro: o vapor do fogo consome a sua carne, e ele luta com o calor da fornalha; o ruído do martelo e da bigorna está sempre nos seus ouvidos, e os seus olhos olham continuamente para o modelo da coisa que faz; põe o seu ânimo em acabar a sua obra, e vela para a polir perfeitamente;

28The smith also sitting by the anvil, and considering the iron work, the vapour of the fire wasteth his flesh, and he fighteth with the heat of the furnace: the noise of the hammer and the anvil is ever in his ears, and his eyes look still upon the pattern of the thing that he maketh; he setteth his mind to finish his work, and watcheth to polish it perfectly:

29assim também o oleiro, sentado à sua obra e fazendo girar a roda com os pés, que está sempre cuidadosamente posto no seu trabalho e faz toda a sua obra por conta;

29So doth the potter sitting at his work, and turning the wheel about with his feet, who is alway carefully set at his work, and maketh all his work by number;

30ele modela o barro com o braço, e dobra a sua força diante dos pés; aplica-se a vidrá-lo, e é diligente em limpar a fornalha.

30He fashioneth the clay with his arm, and boweth down his strength before his feet; he applieth himself to lead it over; and he is diligent to make clean the furnace:

31Todos estes confiam nas suas mãos, e cada um é sábio na sua obra.

31All these trust to their hands: and every one is wise in his work.

32Sem estes não se pode habitar uma cidade; e eles não morarão onde quiserem, nem andarão de um lado para outro.

32Without these cannot a city be inhabited: and they shall not dwell where they will, nor go up and down:

33Não serão procurados no conselho público, nem se assentarão em lugar alto na congregação; não se assentarão na cadeira dos juízes, nem entenderão a sentença do juízo; não podem declarar a justiça e o juízo, e não serão achados onde se dizem parábolas.

33They shall not be sought for in publick counsel, nor sit high in the congregation: they shall not sit on the judges’ seat, nor understand the sentence of judgment: they cannot declare justice and judgment; and they shall not be found where parables are spoken.

34Mas eles sustentarão o estado do mundo, e todo o seu desejo está na obra do seu ofício.

34But they will maintain the state of the world, and all their desire is in the work of their craft.
