Eclesiástico 40

1Grande trabalho foi criado para todo homem, e um jugo pesado está sobre os filhos de Adão, desde o dia em que saem do ventre de sua mãe até o dia em que voltam à mãe de todas as coisas.

1Great travail is created for every man, and an heavy yoke is upon the sons of Adam, from the day that they go out of their mother’s womb, till the day that they return to the mother of all things.

2A imaginação das coisas por vir e o dia da morte perturbam os seus pensamentos e causam temor ao coração;

2Their imagination of things to come, and the day of death, trouble their thoughts, and cause fear of heart;

3desde aquele que se assenta num trono de glória até aquele que está humilhado na terra e na cinza;

3From him that sitteth on a throne of glory, unto him that is humbled in earth and ashes;

4desde aquele que veste púrpura e coroa até aquele que está vestido de uma túnica de linho.

4From him that weareth purple and a crown, unto him that is clothed with a linen frock.

5A ira, e a inveja, a perturbação e a inquietação, o temor da morte, e a cólera, e a contenda; e, no tempo do descanso sobre o seu leito, o seu sono da noite lhe muda o entendimento.

5Wrath, and envy, trouble, and unquietness, fear of death, and anger, and strife, and in the time of rest upon his bed his night sleep, do change his knowledge.

6Pouco ou nada é o seu descanso, e depois está no seu sono como num dia de vigia, perturbado na visão do seu coração, como se tivesse escapado de uma batalha.

6A little or nothing is his rest, and afterward he is in his sleep, as in a day of keeping watch, troubled in the vision of his heart, as if he were escaped out of a battle.

7Quando tudo está seguro, ele desperta e se maravilha de que o temor não era nada.

7When all is safe, he awaketh, and marvelleth that the fear was nothing.

8Tais coisas acontecem a toda carne, tanto ao homem como ao animal, e isto sete vezes mais aos pecadores.

8Such things happen unto all flesh, both man and beast, and that is sevenfold more upon sinners.

9A morte, e o derramamento de sangue, a contenda e a espada, as calamidades, a fome, a tribulação e o flagelo:

9Death, and bloodshed, strife, and sword, calamities, famine, tribulation, and the scourge;

10estas coisas foram criadas para os ímpios, e por causa deles veio o dilúvio.

10These things are created for the wicked, and for their sakes came the flood.

11Todas as coisas que são da terra voltarão à terra; e o que é das águas volta ao mar.

11All things that are of the earth shall turn to the earth again: and that which is of the waters doth return into the sea.

12Todo suborno e injustiça serão apagados; mas o trato verdadeiro permanecerá para sempre.

12All bribery and injustice shall be blotted out: but true dealing shall endure for ever.

13Os bens dos injustos se secarão como um rio, e desaparecerão com estrondo, como um grande trovão na chuva.

13The goods of the unjust shall be dried up like a river, and shall vanish with noise, like a great thunder in rain.

14Enquanto abre a mão, ele se alegrará; assim os transgressores serão reduzidos a nada.

14While he openeth his hand he shall rejoice: so shall transgressors come to nought.

15Os filhos dos ímpios não produzirão muitos ramos, mas são como raízes imundas sobre uma rocha dura.

15The children of the ungodly shall not bring forth many branches: but are as unclean roots upon a hard rock.

16A erva que cresce junto a toda água e à margem de um rio será arrancada antes de toda a relva.

16The weed growing upon every water and bank of a river shall be pulled up before all grass.

17A generosidade é como um jardim fertilíssimo, e a misericórdia permanece para sempre.

17Bountifulness is as a most fruitful garden, and mercifulness endureth for ever.

18Trabalhar e contentar-se com o que se tem é vida doce; mas quem acha um tesouro está acima de ambos.

18To labour, and to be content with that a man hath, is a sweet life: but he that findeth a treasure is above them both.

19Os filhos e a edificação de uma cidade perpetuam o nome do homem; mas a mulher irrepreensível é tida acima de ambos.

19Children and the building of a city continue a man’s name: but a blameless wife is counted above them both.

20O vinho e a música alegram o coração; mas o amor da sabedoria está acima de ambos.

20Wine and musick rejoice the heart: but the love of wisdom is above them both.

21A flauta e o saltério fazem doce melodia; mas a língua agradável está acima de ambos.

21The pipe and the psaltery make sweet melody: but a pleasant tongue is above them both.

22O teu olho deseja graça e formosura; mas, mais do que ambas, o trigo enquanto está verde.

22Thine eye desireth favour and beauty: but more than both corn while it is green.

23O amigo e o companheiro nunca se encontram mal; mas acima de ambos está a mulher com o seu marido.

23A friend and companion never meet amiss: but above both is a wife with her husband.

24Os irmãos e o socorro são para o tempo da angústia; mas a esmola livrará mais do que ambos.

24Brethren and help are against time of trouble: but alms shall deliver more than them both.

25O ouro e a prata firmam o pé; mas o conselho é estimado acima de ambos.

25Gold and silver make the foot stand sure: but counsel is esteemed above them both.

26As riquezas e a força levantam o coração; mas o temor do Senhor está acima de ambos; não há falta no temor do Senhor, e ele não precisa buscar socorro.

26Riches and strength lift up the heart: but the fear of the Lord is above them both: there is no want in the fear of the Lord, and it needeth not to seek help.

27O temor do Senhor é um jardim frutífero, e o cobre acima de toda glória.

27The fear of the Lord is a fruitful garden, and covereth him above all glory.

28Meu filho, não leves vida de mendigo, pois melhor é morrer do que mendigar.

28My son, lead not a beggar’s life; for better it is to die than to beg.

29A vida daquele que depende da mesa de outro homem não deve ser contada por vida, pois ele se contamina com o alimento alheio; mas o homem sábio e bem-educado se guardará disso.

29The life of him that dependeth on another man’s table is not to be counted for a life; for he polluteth himself with other men’s meat: but a wise man well nurtured will beware thereof.

30O mendigar é doce na boca do desavergonhado, mas no seu ventre arderá um fogo.

30Begging is sweet in the mouth of the shameless: but in his belly there shall burn a fire.
