Epístola de Barnabé 1

1Saúdo-vos, filhos e filhas, em nome do Senhor que nos amou, em paz.

1I Bid you greeting, sons and daughters, in the name of the Lord that loved us, in peace.

2Vendo que as ordenanças de Deus são grandes e ricas para convosco, alegro-me com uma alegria excessivamente grande e transbordante pelos vossos bem-aventurados e gloriosos espíritos; tão inata é a graça do dom espiritual que recebestes.

2Seeing that the ordinances of God are great and rich unto you, I rejoice with an exceeding great and overflowing joy at your blessed and glorious spirits; so innate is the grace of the spiritual gift that ye have received.

3Por isso também me congratulo ainda mais, esperando ser salvo, porque vejo verdadeiramente o Espírito derramado entre vós, das riquezas da fonte do Senhor. Tanto me assombrou a tão desejada visão de vós, a respeito de vós.

3Wherefore also I the more congratulate myself hoping to be saved, for that I truly see the Spirit poured out among you from the riches of the fount of the Lord. So greatly did the much-desired sight of you astonish me respecting you.

4Estando, pois, persuadido disto, e sendo consciente comigo mesmo de que, tendo falado muito entre vós, sei que o Senhor viajou comigo no caminho da justiça, e estou inteiramente constrangido também eu mesmo a isto, a amar-vos mais do que à minha própria alma (pois grande fé e amor habitam em vós, pela esperança da vida que é a Sua)--considerando isto, portanto, que, se eu tiver o cuidado de comunicar-vos alguma porção do que recebi, isso redundará em minha recompensa por haver servido a tais espíritos, apressei-me a enviar-vos um pequeno escrito, para que, juntamente com a vossa fé, tivésseis também perfeito o vosso conhecimento.

4Being therefore persuaded of this, and being conscious with myself that having said much among you I know that the Lord journeyed with me on the way of righteousness, and am wholly constrained also myself to this, to love you more than my own soul (for great faith and love dwelleth in you through the hope of the life which is His)--considering this therefore, that, if it shall be my care to communicate to you some portion of that which I received, it shall turn to my reward for having ministered to such spirits, I was eager to send you a trifle, that along with your faith ye might have your knowledge also perfect.

5Pois bem, há três ordenanças do Senhor: a esperança da vida, que é o princípio e o fim da nossa fé; e a justiça, que é o princípio e o fim do juízo; o amor demonstrado em alegria e exultação, o testemunho das obras de justiça.

5Well then, there are three ordinances of the Lord; the hope of life, which is the beginning and end of our faith; and righteousness, which is the beginning and end of judgment; love shown in gladness and exultation, the testimony of works of righteousness.

6Pois o Senhor nos deu a conhecer, por meio dos Seus profetas, as coisas passadas e presentes, dando-nos igualmente as primícias do sabor das coisas futuras. E, vendo cada uma destas coisas cumprindo-se separadamente, conforme Ele falou, devemos oferecer uma oferta mais rica e mais elevada ao temor d'Ele. Mas eu, não como se fosse mestre, mas como um de vós, mostrarei umas poucas coisas, com as quais vos alegrareis nas circunstâncias presentes.

6For the Lord made known to us by His prophets things past and present, giving us likewise the firstfruits of the taste of things future. And seeing each of these things severally coming to pass, according as He spake, we ought to offer a richer and higher offering to the fear of Him. But I, not as though I were a teacher, but as one of yourselves, will show forth a few things, whereby ye shall be gladdened in the present circumstances.
