Epístola de Barnabé 10

1Mas, quanto ao que Moisés disse: Não comereis porco, nem águia, nem falcão, nem corvo, nem peixe algum que não tenha escamas, ele recebeu em seu entendimento três ordenanças.

1But forasmuch as Moses said; Ye shall not eat swine nor eagle nor falcon nor crow nor any fish which hath no scale upon it, he received in his understanding three ordinances.

2Sim, e além disso Ele lhes diz em Deuteronômio: E porei como aliança sobre este povo as Minhas ordenanças. Assim, pois, não é mandamento de Deus que não mordam com os dentes, mas Moisés o disse em espírito.

2Yea and further He saith unto them in Deuteronomy; And I will lay as a covenant upon this people My ordinances. So then it is not a commandment of God that they should not bite with their teeth, but Moses spake it in spirit.

3Por conseguinte, mencionou o porco com esta intenção. Não te apegarás, diz ele, a tais homens, que são semelhantes a porcos; isto é, quando estão na abundância esquecem o Senhor, mas quando estão na penúria reconhecem o Senhor, assim como o porco, quando come, não conhece o seu senhor, mas quando tem fome grita, e quando de novo recebeu comida fica calado.

3Accordingly he mentioned the swine with this intent. Thou shalt not cleave, saith he, to such men who are like unto swine; that is, when they are in luxury they forget the Lord, but when they are in want they recognize the Lord, just as the swine when it eateth knoweth not his lord, but when it is hungry it crieth out, and when it has received food again it is silent.

4Nem comerás águia, nem falcão, nem milhafre, nem corvo. Não te apegarás, diz Ele, nem serás comparado a tais homens que não sabem prover alimento para si mesmos com labuta e suor, mas, na sua iniquidade, tomam o que pertence a outros, e, como se andassem em inocência, vigiam e procuram alguém a quem roubar na sua rapacidade, assim como somente estas aves não provêm alimento para si mesmas, mas ficam ociosas e buscam como poderão comer a carne que pertence a outros, sendo pestilentas nas suas más ações.

4Neither shalt thou eat eagle nor falcon nor kite nor crow. Thou shalt not, He saith, cleave unto, or be likened to, such men who know not how to provide food for themselves by toil and sweat, but in their lawlessness seize what belongeth to others, and as if they were walking in guilelessness watch and search about for some one to rob in their rapacity, just as these birds alone do not provide food for themselves, but sit idle and seek how they may eat the meat that belongeth to others, being pestilent in their evil-doings.

5E não comerás, diz Ele, lampreia, nem polvo, nem sépia. Não te tornarás, quer dizer, semelhante a tais homens, que são desesperadamente maus e já estão condenados à morte, assim como somente estes peixes são malditos e nadam nas profundezas, não nadando na superfície como os demais, mas habitam no fundo, abaixo do mar profundo.

5And thou shalt not eat, saith He, lamprey nor polypus nor cuttle fish. Thou shalt not, He meaneth, become like unto such men, who are desperately wicked, and are already condemned to death, just as these fishes alone are accursed and swim in the depths, not swimming on the surface like the rest, but dwell on the ground beneath the deep sea.

6Além disso, não comerás a lebre. Por quê? Não serás achado corruptor de meninos, nem te tornarás semelhante a tais pessoas; pois a lebre ganha cada ano uma passagem no corpo; pois, segundo o número de anos que vive, tem exatamente outros tantos orifícios.

6Moreover thou shalt not eat the hare. Why so? Thou shalt not be found a corrupter of boys, nor shalt thou become like such persons; for the hare gaineth one passage in the body every year; for according to the number of years it lives it has just so many orifices.

7De novo, nem comerás a hiena; não te tornarás, diz Ele, adúltero nem fornicador, nem te assemelharás a tais pessoas. Por quê? Porque este animal muda de natureza ano após ano, e torna-se numa ocasião macho e noutra fêmea.

7Again, neither shalt thou eat the hyena; thou shalt not, saith He, become an adulterer or a fornicator, neither shalt thou resemble such persons. Why so? Because this animal changeth its nature year by year, and becometh at one time male and at another female.

8Além disso, Ele detestou também a doninha, e com razão. Não te tornarás, diz Ele, como aqueles homens de quem ouvimos que praticam iniquidade com a boca, para impureza, nem te apegarás a mulheres impuras que praticam iniquidade com a boca. Pois este animal concebe pela boca.

8Moreover He hath hated the weasel also and with good reason. Thou shalt not, saith He, become such as those men of whom we hear as working iniquity with their mouth for uncleanness, neither shalt thou cleave unto impure women who work iniquity with their mouth. For this animal conceiveth with its mouth.

9Acerca dos alimentos, pois, Moisés recebeu três decretos neste sentido e os proferiu em sentido espiritual; mas eles os aceitaram segundo a concupiscência da carne, como se se referissem ao comer.

9Concerning meats then Moses received three decrees to this effect and uttered them in a spiritual sense; but they accepted them according to the lust of the flesh, as though they referred to eating.

10E Davi também recebe conhecimento dos mesmos três decretos, e diz: Bem-aventurado o homem que não andou no conselho dos ímpios--assim como os peixes vão na escuridão para as profundezas; e não se deteve no caminho dos pecadores--assim como os que fingem temer o Senhor pecam como porcos; e não se assentou na roda dos destruidores--como as aves que estão pousadas para a presa. Tendes agora a lição completa acerca do comer.

10And David also receiveth knowledge of the same three decrees, and saith; Blessed is the man who hath not gone in the council of the ungodly--even as the fishes go in darkness into the depths; and hath not stood in the path of sinners--just as they who pretend to fear the Lord sin like swine; and hath not sat on the seat of the destroyers--as the birds that are seated for prey. Ye have now the complete lesson concerning eating.

11De novo Moisés diz: Comereis tudo o que tem o casco fendido e rumina. Que quer dizer? Aquele que recebe o alimento conhece Aquele que lho dá, e, sendo reconfortado, parece alegrar-se n'Ele. Bem disse ele, tendo em vista o mandamento. Que quer dizer, então? Apegai-vos aos que temem o Senhor, aos que meditam no coração sobre a distinção da palavra que receberam, aos que falam das ordenanças do Senhor e as guardam, aos que sabem que a meditação é obra de alegria e que ruminam a palavra do Senhor. Mas por que o que tem o casco fendido? Porque o justo anda neste mundo e ao mesmo tempo espera o santo mundo vindouro. Vedes que sábio legislador era Moisés.

11Again Moses saith; Ye shall eat everything that divideth the hoof and cheweth the cud. What meaneth he? He that receiveth the food knoweth Him that giveth him the food, and being refreshed appeareth to rejoice in him. Well said he, having regard to the commandment. What then meaneth he? Cleave unto those that fear the Lord, with those who meditate in their heart on the distinction of the word which they have received, with those who tell of the ordinances of the Lord and keep them, with those who know that meditation is a work of gladness and who chew the cud of the word of the Lord. But why that which divideth the hoof? Because the righteous man both walketh in this world, and at the same time looketh for the holy world to come. Ye see how wise a lawgiver Moses was.

12Mas de onde haviam eles de perceber ou entender estas coisas? Contudo, nós, tendo percebido com justiça os mandamentos, dizemo-los como o Senhor quis. Para este fim Ele circuncidou os nossos ouvidos e corações, para que entendêssemos estas coisas.

12But whence should they perceive or understand these things? Howbeit we having justly perceived the commandments tell them as the Lord willed. To this end He circumcised our ears and hearts, that we might understand these things.
