Judite 11

1Então Holofernes lhe disse: Mulher, tem bom ânimo, não temas no teu coração; pois nunca fiz mal a ninguém que quisesse servir a Nabucodonosor, rei de toda a terra.

1Then said Holofernes unto her, Woman, be of good comfort, fear not in thine heart: for I never hurt any that was willing to serve Nabuchodonosor, the king of all the earth.

2Agora, pois, se o teu povo, que habita nos montes, não me tivesse desprezado, eu não teria levantado a minha lança contra eles; mas eles mesmos fizeram isto a si.

2Now therefore, if thy people that dwelleth in the mountains had not set light by me, I would not have lifted up my spear against them: but they have done these things to themselves.

3Mas agora dize-me por que fugiste deles e vieste a nós; pois vieste para te salvares. Tem bom ânimo; viverás esta noite e daqui em diante;

3But now tell me wherefore thou art fled from them, and art come unto us: for thou art come for safeguard; be of good comfort, thou shalt live this night, and hereafter:

4pois ninguém te fará mal, mas todos te tratarão bem, como tratam os servos do rei Nabucodonosor, meu senhor.

4For none shall hurt thee, but entreat thee well, as they do the servants of king Nabuchodonosor my lord.

5Então Judite lhe disse: Recebe as palavras da tua serva, e permite que a tua escrava fale na tua presença, e não direi mentira alguma ao meu senhor esta noite.

5Then Judith said unto him, Receive the words of thy servant, and suffer thine handmaid to speak in thy presence, and I will declare no lie to my lord this night.

6E, se seguires as palavras da tua escrava, Deus levará a coisa a bom termo por meio de ti, e o meu senhor não falhará nos seus propósitos.

6And if thou wilt follow the words of thine handmaid, God will bring the thing perfectly to pass by thee; and my lord shall not fail of his purposes.

7Pela vida de Nabucodonosor, rei de toda a terra, e pela vida do seu poder, que te enviou para a sustentação de todo ser vivente: não só os homens o servirão por teu meio, mas também os animais do campo, e o gado, e as aves do céu viverão pelo teu poder, sob Nabucodonosor e toda a sua casa.

7As Nabuchodonosor king of all the earth liveth, and as his power liveth, who hath sent thee for the upholding of every living thing: for not only men shall serve him by thee, but also the beasts of the field, and the cattle, and the fowls of the air, shall live by thy power under Nabuchodonosor and all his house.

8Pois ouvimos falar da tua sabedoria e da tua habilidade, e em toda a terra se diz que só tu és excelente em todo o reino, e poderoso em conhecimento, e admirável nos feitos de guerra.

8For we have heard of thy wisdom and thy policies, and it is reported in all the earth, that thou only art excellent in all the kingdom, and mighty in knowledge, and wonderful in feats of war.

9Ora, quanto ao que Aquior disse no teu conselho, ouvimos as suas palavras; pois os homens de Betúlia o salvaram, e ele lhes declarou tudo o que te dissera.

9Now as concerning the matter, which Achior did speak in thy council, we have heard his words; for the men of Bethulia saved him, and he declared unto them all that he had spoken unto thee.

10Portanto, ó senhor e governador, não desprezes a sua palavra, mas guarda-a no teu coração, porque é verdadeira; pois a nossa nação não será castigada, nem a espada prevalecerá contra eles, a não ser que pequem contra o seu Deus.

10Therefore, O lord and governor, respect not his word; but lay it up in thine heart, for it is true: for our nation shall not be punished, neither can sword prevail against them, except they sin against their God.

11E agora, para que o meu senhor não seja derrotado nem frustrado no seu propósito, eis que a morte já caiu sobre eles, e o seu pecado os alcançou, com o qual provocarão à ira o seu Deus sempre que fizerem o que não convém fazer.

11And now, that my lord be not defeated and frustrate of his purpose, even death is now fallen upon them, and their sin hath overtaken them, wherewith they will provoke their God to anger whensoever they shall do that which is not fit to be done:

12Pois os víveres lhes faltam, e toda a sua água é escassa, e resolveram lançar mão do seu gado, e decidiram consumir todas as coisas que Deus lhes proibiu comer pelas suas leis;

12For their victuals fail them, and all their water is scant, and they have determined to lay hands upon their cattle, and purposed to consume all those things, that God hath forbidden them to eat by his laws:

13e estão resolvidos a gastar as primícias dos dízimos do vinho e do azeite, que tinham santificado e reservado para os sacerdotes que servem em Jerusalém diante da face do nosso Deus; coisas que a nenhum do povo é lícito sequer tocar com as mãos.

13And are resolved to spend the firstfruits of the tenths of wine and oil, which they had sanctified, and reserved for the priests that serve in Jerusalem before the face of our God; the which things it is not lawful for any of the people so much as to touch with their hands.

14Pois enviaram alguns a Jerusalém, porque também os que lá habitam fizeram o mesmo, para lhes trazerem a permissão do conselho dos anciãos.

14For they have sent some to Jerusalem, because they also that dwell there have done the like, to bring them a licence from the senate.

15E, quando lhes trouxerem a resposta, logo o farão, e naquele mesmo dia te serão entregues para serem destruídos.

15Now when they shall bring them word, they will forthwith do it, and they shall be given to thee to be destroyed the same day.

16Por isso eu, tua escrava, sabendo tudo isto, fugi da presença deles; e Deus me enviou para fazer contigo coisas de que se espantará toda a terra e todo aquele que as ouvir.

16Wherefore I thine handmaid, knowing all this, am fled from their presence; and God hath sent me to work things with thee, whereat all the earth shall be astonished, and whosoever shall hear it.

17Pois a tua serva é piedosa e serve ao Deus do céu dia e noite; agora, pois, meu senhor, ficarei contigo, e a tua serva sairá de noite ao vale, e orarei a Deus, e ele me dirá quando tiverem cometido os seus pecados;

17For thy servant is religious, and serveth the God of heaven day and night: now therefore, my lord, I will remain with thee, and thy servant will go out by night into the valley, and I will pray unto God, and he will tell me when they have committed their sins:

18e eu virei e to farei saber; então sairás com todo o teu exército, e não haverá nenhum deles que te resista.

18And I will come and shew it unto thee: then thou shalt go forth with all thine army, and there shall be none of them that shall resist thee.

19E eu te conduzirei pelo meio da Judeia até chegares diante de Jerusalém; e porei o teu trono no meio dela; e tu os conduzirás como ovelhas que não têm pastor, e nem um cão abrirá a boca contra ti; pois estas coisas me foram ditas segundo a minha presciência, e me foram declaradas, e fui enviada para te dizer.

19And I will lead thee through the midst of Judea, until thou come before Jerusalem; and I will set thy throne in the midst thereof; and thou shalt drive them as sheep that have no shepherd, and a dog shall not so much as open his mouth at thee: for these things were told me according to my foreknowledge, and they were declared unto me, and I am sent to tell thee.

20Então as suas palavras agradaram a Holofernes e a todos os seus servos; e maravilharam-se da sua sabedoria, e disseram:

20Then her words pleased Holofernes and all his servants; and they marvelled at her wisdom, and said,

21Não há mulher como esta de um extremo ao outro da terra, tanto pela formosura do rosto como pela sabedoria das palavras.

21There is not such a woman from one end of the earth to the other, both for beauty of face, and wisdom of words.

22Também Holofernes lhe disse: Deus fez bem em te enviar adiante do povo, para que a força esteja nas nossas mãos e a destruição sobre os que desprezam o meu senhor.

22Likewise Holofernes said unto her, God hath done well to send thee before the people, that strength might be in our hands and destruction upon them that lightly regard my lord.

23E agora és não só formosa no semblante, mas também sábia nas palavras; certamente, se fizeres como disseste, o teu Deus será o meu Deus, e habitarás na casa do rei Nabucodonosor, e serás afamada em toda a terra.

23And now thou art both beautiful in thy countenance, and witty in thy words: surely if thou do as thou hast spoken thy God shall be my God, and thou shalt dwell in the house of king Nabuchodonosor, and shalt be renowned through the whole earth.
