Judite 4

1Ora, os filhos de Israel que habitavam na Judeia ouviram tudo o que Holofernes, general de Nabucodonosor, rei dos assírios, fizera às nações, e de que maneira saqueara todos os seus templos e os reduzira a nada.

1Now the children of Israel, that dwelt in Judea, heard all that Holofernes the chief captain of Nabuchodonosor king of the Assyrians had done to the nations, and after what manner he had spoiled all their temples, and brought them to nought.

2Por isso tiveram grande medo dele, e se perturbaram por Jerusalém e pelo templo do Senhor seu Deus;

2Therefore they were exceedingly afraid of him, and were troubled for Jerusalem, and for the temple of the Lord their God:

3pois havia pouco tinham voltado do cativeiro, e todo o povo da Judeia se reunira recentemente; e os utensílios, e o altar, e a casa tinham sido santificados depois da profanação.

3For they were newly returned from the captivity, and all the people of Judea were lately gathered together: and the vessels, and the altar, and the house, were sanctified after the profanation.

4Por isso enviaram mensageiros a todos os territórios de Samaria, e às aldeias, e a Bet-Horom, e Belmém, e Jericó, e a Coba, e Esora, e ao vale de Salém;

4Therefore they sent into all the coasts of Samaria, and the villages and to Bethoron, and Belmen, and Jericho, and to Choba, and Esora, and to the valley of Salem:

5e ocuparam de antemão todos os cumes dos montes altos, e fortificaram as aldeias que neles havia, e armazenaram víveres para a provisão da guerra; pois os seus campos tinham sido colhidos havia pouco.

5And possessed themselves beforehand of all the tops of the high mountains, and fortified the villages that were in them, and laid up victuals for the provision of war: for their fields were of late reaped.

6Também Joaquim, o sumo sacerdote, que naqueles dias estava em Jerusalém, escreveu aos que habitavam em Betúlia e em Betomestaim, que está defronte de Esdrelom, para o lado da planície, perto de Dotaim,

6Also Joacim the high priest, which was in those days in Jerusalem, wrote to them that dwelt in Bethulia, and Betomestham, which is over against Esdraelon toward the open country, near to Dothaim,

7ordenando-lhes que guardassem as passagens da região montanhosa; pois por elas se entrava na Judeia, e era fácil deter os que quisessem subir, porque a passagem era estreita, para dois homens no máximo.

7Charging them to keep the passages of the hill country: for by them there was an entrance into Judea, and it was easy to stop them that would come up, because the passage was straight, for two men at the most.

8E os filhos de Israel fizeram como lhes ordenara Joaquim, o sumo sacerdote, com os anciãos de todo o povo de Israel, que habitavam em Jerusalém.

8And the children of Israel did as Joacim the high priest had commanded them, with the ancients of all the people of Israel, which dwelt at Jerusalem.

9Então todo homem de Israel clamou a Deus com grande fervor, e com grande veemência humilharam as suas almas;

9Then every man of Israel cried to God with great fervency, and with great vehemency did they humble their souls:

10eles, e suas mulheres, e seus filhos, e o seu gado, e todo estrangeiro e jornaleiro, e os seus servos comprados por dinheiro, cingiram os lombos de saco.

10Both they, and their wives and their children, and their cattle, and every stranger and hireling, and their servants bought with money, put sackcloth upon their loins.

11Assim todo homem e mulher, e as criancinhas, e os habitantes de Jerusalém se prostraram diante do templo, e lançaram cinza sobre as cabeças, e estenderam o seu saco diante da face do Senhor; também puseram saco em volta do altar,

11Thus every man and woman, and the little children, and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, fell before the temple, and cast ashes upon their heads, and spread out their sackcloth before the face of the Lord: also they put sackcloth about the altar,

12e clamaram ao Deus de Israel, todos a uma, com fervor, que não entregasse os seus filhos à pilhagem, e as suas mulheres ao saque, e as cidades da sua herança à destruição, e o santuário à profanação e ao opróbrio, para alegria das nações.

12And cried to the God of Israel all with one consent earnestly, that he would not give their children for a prey, and their wives for a spoil, and the cities of their inheritance to destruction, and the sanctuary to profanation and reproach, and for the nations to rejoice at.

13Assim Deus ouviu as suas orações e olhou para as suas aflições; pois o povo jejuou muitos dias em toda a Judeia e em Jerusalém, diante do santuário do Senhor Todo-Poderoso.

13So God heard their prayers, and looked upon their afflictions: for the people fasted many days in all Judea and Jerusalem before the sanctuary of the Lord Almighty.

14E Joaquim, o sumo sacerdote, e todos os sacerdotes que estavam diante do Senhor, e os que ministravam ao Senhor, tinham os lombos cingidos de saco, e ofereciam o holocausto contínuo, com os votos e as ofertas voluntárias do povo,

14And Joacim the high priest, and all the priests that stood before the Lord, and they which ministered unto the Lord, had their loins girt with sackcloth, and offered the daily burnt offerings, with the vows and free gifts of the people,

15e tinham cinza sobre as suas mitras, e clamavam ao Senhor com todas as suas forças, para que olhasse com benevolência para toda a casa de Israel.

15And had ashes on their mitres, and cried unto the Lord with all their power, that he would look upon all the house of Israel graciously.
