Martírio de Policarpo 1

1A igreja de Deus que peregrina em Esmirna à Igreja de Deus que peregrina em Filomélio, e a todas as fraternidades da santa e universal Igreja que peregrinam em todo lugar: misericórdia, paz e amor da parte de Deus Pai e de nosso Senhor Jesus Cristo sejam multiplicados.

1The church of God which sojourneth at Smyrna to the Church of God which sojourneth in Philomelium and to all the brotherhoods of the holy and universal Church sojourning in every place; mercy and peace and love from God the Father and our Lord Jesus Christ be multiplied.

2Escrevemo-vos, irmãos, um relato daquilo que sucedeu àqueles que sofreram o martírio, e especialmente ao bem-aventurado Policarpo, o qual fez cessar a perseguição, pondo sobre ela como que o seu selo mediante o seu martírio. Pois quase todos os acontecimentos precedentes se deram para que o Senhor nos mostrasse mais uma vez um exemplo de martírio conforme ao Evangelho.

2We write unto you, brethren, an account of what befell those that suffered martyrdom and especially the blessed Polycarp, who stayed the persecution, having as it were set his seal upon it by his martyrdom. For nearly all the foregoing events came to pass that the Lord might show us once more an example of martyrdom which is conformable to the Gospel

3Pois ele aguardou para ser entregue, assim como o Senhor o fez, a fim de que nós também fôssemos seus imitadores, não atentando somente para o que concerne a nós mesmos, mas também para o que concerne aos nossos próximos. Pois é próprio do amor verdadeiro e constante desejar não apenas a própria salvação, mas também a de todos os irmãos.

3For he lingered that he might be delivered up, even as the Lord did, to the end that we too might be imitators of him, not lookingonly to that which concerneth ourselves, but also to that which concerneth our neighbors. For it is the office of true and steadfast love, not only to desire that oneself be saved, but all the brethren also.
