1Disse-lhe: “Senhor, explica-me também isto.” “Que é o que perguntas?” disse ele.

1I said to him, “Sir, explain this also to me.” “What is it you ask?” he said.

2“Se, senhor,” continuei, “os que se entregam ao luxo e são enganados são atormentados pelo mesmo período de tempo em que se entregaram ao luxo e ao engano?” Disse-me: “São atormentados do mesmo modo.” [“São atormentados muito menos, senhor,” respondi;] “pois os que são tão luxuosos e que esquecem a Deus deveriam ser atormentados sete vezes mais.” Disse-me: “És tolo e não compreendes o poder do tormento.” “Por que, senhor,” disse eu, “se o tivesse compreendido, não te teria pedido que mo mostrasses.” “Ouve,” disse ele, “o poder de ambos.

2“Whether, sir,” I continued, “they who indulge in luxury, and who are deceived, are tortured for the same period of time that they have indulged in luxury and deceit?” He said to me, “They are tortured in the same manner.” [“They are tormented much less, sir,” I replied;] “for those who are so luxurious and who forget God ought to be tortured seven-fold.” He said to me, “You are foolish, and do not understand the power of torment.” “Why, sir,” I said, “if I had understood it, I would not have asked you to show me.” “Hear,” he said, “the power of both.

3O tempo do luxo e do engano é uma hora; mas a hora do tormento equivale a trinta dias. Se, portanto, um homem se entrega ao luxo por um dia e é enganado e atormentado por um dia, o dia do seu tormento equivale a um ano inteiro. Por todos os dias de luxo, pois, há tantos anos de tormento a sofrer. Vês, pois,” continuou, “que o tempo do luxo e do engano é muito curto, mas o do castigo e tormento é longo.”

3The time of luxury and deceit is one hour; but the hour of torment is equivalent to thirty days. If, accordingly, a man indulge in luxury for one day, and be deceived and be tortured for one day, the day of his torture is equivalent to a whole year. For all the days of luxury, therefore, there are as many years of torture to be undergone. You see, then,” he continued, “that the time of luxury and deceit is very short, but that of punishment and torture long.”
