Protoevangelho de Tiago 1

1Nos registros das doze tribos de Israel havia Joaquim, homem excessivamente rico; e trazia suas ofertas em dobro, dizendo: Haverá do meu supérfluo para todo o povo, e haverá a oferta pelo meu perdão ao Senhor, como propiciação por mim.

1In the records of the twelve tribes of Israel was Joachim, a man rich exceedingly; and he brought his offerings double, saying: There shall be of my superabundance to all the people, and there shall be the offering for my forgiveness to the Lord for a propitiation for me.

2Pois o grande dia do Senhor estava próximo, e os filhos de Israel traziam as suas ofertas.

2For the great day of the Lord was at hand, and the sons of Israel were bringing their offerings.

3E pôs-se diante dele Rúbim, dizendo: Não te convém trazer primeiro as tuas ofertas, porque não geraste descendência em Israel.

3And there stood over against him Rubim, saying: It is not meet for thee first to bring thine offerings, because thou hast not made seed in Israel.

4E Joaquim ficou excessivamente aflito e foi aos registros das doze tribos do povo, dizendo: Verei os registros das doze tribos de Israel, para saber se só eu não gerei descendência em Israel.

4And Joachim was exceedingly grieved, and went away to the registers of the twelve tribes of the people, saying: I shall see the registers of the twelve tribes of Israel, as to whether I alone have not made seed in Israel.

5E pesquisou e achou que todos os justos tinham suscitado descendência em Israel.

5And he searched, and found that all the righteous had raised up seed in Israel.

6E lembrou-se do patriarca Abraão, a quem, no último dia, Deus deu um filho, Isaque.

6And he called to mind the patriarch Abraham, that in the last day God gave him a son Isaac.

7E Joaquim ficou excessivamente aflito e não se apresentou diante de sua mulher; mas retirou-se para o deserto, e ali armou sua tenda, e jejuou quarenta dias e quarenta noites, dizendo consigo mesmo: Não descerei nem para comer nem para beber, até que o Senhor meu Deus olhe para mim, e a oração será o meu alimento e a minha bebida.

7And Joachim was exceedingly grieved, and did not come into the presence of his wife; but he retired to the desert, and there pitched his tent, and fasted forty days and forty nights, saying in himself: I will not go down either for food or for drink until the Lord my God shall look upon me, and prayer shall be my food and drink.
