Protoevangelho de Tiago 23

1E Herodes procurou João e enviou oficiais a Zacarias, dizendo: Onde escondeste o teu filho?

1And Herod searched for John, and sent officers to Zacharias, saying: Where hast thou hid thy son?

2E ele, respondendo, disse-lhes: Sou servo de Deus nas coisas santas, e estou sentado continuamente no templo do Senhor: não sei onde está o meu filho.

2And he, answering, said to them: I am the servant of God in holy things, and I sit constantly in the temple of the Lord: I do not know where my son is.

3E os oficiais foram e relataram todas essas coisas a Herodes.

3And the officers went away, and reported all these things to Herod.

4E Herodes se enfureceu e disse: O filho dele está destinado a ser rei sobre Israel.

4And Herod was enraged, and said: His son is destined to be king over Israel.

5E enviou-lhe outra vez, dizendo: Dize a verdade; onde está o teu filho? pois sabes que a tua vida está em minha mão.

5And he sent to him again, saying: Tell the truth; where is thy son? for thou knowest that thy life is in my hand.

6E Zacarias disse: Sou mártir de Deus, se derramares o meu sangue; pois o Senhor receberá o meu espírito, porque derramas sangue inocente no vestíbulo do templo do Senhor.

6And Zacharias said: I am God's martyr, if thou sheddest my blood; for the Lord will receive my spirit, because thou sheddest innocent blood at the vestibule of the temple of the Lord.

7E Zacarias foi assassinado ao romper do dia.

7And Zacharias was murdered about daybreak.

8E os filhos de Israel não souberam que ele tinha sido assassinado.

8And the sons of Israel did not know that he had been murdered.
