Sabedoria de Salomão 17

1Pois grandes são os teus juízos e difíceis de explicar; por isso as almas sem instrução se extraviaram.

1For great are thy judgments, and cannot be expressed: therefore unnurtured souls have erred.

2Pois, quando os injustos pensavam oprimir a nação santa, ficaram encerrados nas suas casas, prisioneiros das trevas e acorrentados com os grilhões de uma longa noite, exilados da providência eterna.

2For when unrighteous men thought to oppress the holy nation; they being shut up in their houses, the prisoners of darkness, and fettered with the bonds of a long night, lay there exiled from the eternal providence.

3Pois, enquanto pensavam ficar ocultos nos seus pecados secretos, foram dispersos sob um véu tenebroso de esquecimento, horrivelmente espantados e perturbados por estranhas aparições.

3For while they supposed to lie hid in their secret sins, they were scattered under a dark veil of forgetfulness, being horribly astonished, and troubled with strange apparitions.

4Pois nem o esconderijo que os abrigava os livrava do medo; mas ruídos como de águas que caem ressoavam em redor deles, e lhes apareciam visões tristes de semblantes sombrios.

4For neither might the corner that held them keep them from fear: but noises as of waters falling down sounded about them, and sad visions appeared unto them with heavy countenances.

5Nenhuma força do fogo podia dar-lhes luz, nem as brilhantes chamas das estrelas conseguiam iluminar aquela noite horrível.

5No power of the fire might give them light: neither could the bright flames of the stars endure to lighten that horrible night.

6Somente lhes aparecia um fogo aceso por si mesmo, muito terrível; e, aterrorizados, julgavam as coisas que viam piores do que aquela visão que não viam.

6Only there appeared unto them a fire kindled of itself, very dreadful: for being much terrified, they thought the things which they saw to be worse than the sight they saw not.

7Quanto às ilusões da arte mágica, foram derrubadas, e a sua jactância de sabedoria foi repreendida com vergonha.

7As for the illusions of art magick, they were put down, and their vaunting in wisdom was reproved with disgrace.

8Pois os que prometiam afastar os terrores e as perturbações da alma doente, eles mesmos adoeciam de um medo ridículo.

8For they, that promised to drive away terrors and troubles from a sick soul, were sick themselves of fear, worthy to be laughed at.

9Pois, ainda que nada terrível os amedrontasse, espantados pela passagem dos animais e pelo silvo das serpentes,

9For though no terrible thing did fear them; yet being scared with beasts that passed by, and hissing of serpents,

10morriam de medo, negando que viam o ar, do qual não se pode fugir por lado algum.

10They died for fear, denying that they saw the air, which could of no side be avoided.

11Pois a maldade, condenada pelo seu próprio testemunho, é muito medrosa, e, oprimida pela consciência, sempre imagina o pior.

11For wickedness, condemned by her own witness, is very timorous, and being pressed with conscience, always forecasteth grievous things.

12Pois o medo não é outra coisa senão o abandono dos socorros que a razão oferece.

12For fear is nothing else but a betraying of the succours which reason offereth.

13E, quanto menor é a esperança interior, tanto maior parece a ignorância do que a causa que produz o tormento.

13And the expectation from within, being less, counteth the ignorance more than the cause which bringeth the torment.

14Mas eles, dormindo o mesmo sono naquela noite, verdadeiramente intolerável, que viera sobre eles do fundo do Hades inevitável,

14But they sleeping the same sleep that night, which was indeed intolerable, and which came upon them out of the bottoms of inevitable hell,

15ora eram perseguidos por aparições monstruosas, ora desfaleciam, faltando-lhes o ânimo; pois um temor súbito e inesperado caiu sobre eles.

15Were partly vexed with monstrous apparitions, and partly fainted, their heart failing them: for a sudden fear, and not looked for, came upon them.

16Assim, quem quer que ali caísse ficava estreitamente guardado, encerrado numa prisão sem grades de ferro.

16So then whosoever there fell down was straitly kept, shut up in a prison without iron bars,

17Pois, fosse lavrador, ou pastor, ou trabalhador do campo, era surpreendido e sofria aquela necessidade inevitável; pois todos estavam presos com uma mesma corrente de trevas.

17For whether he were husbandman, or shepherd, or a labourer in the field, he was overtaken, and endured that necessity, which could not be avoided: for they were all bound with one chain of darkness.

18Fosse o vento que assobiava, ou o canto melodioso das aves entre os ramos frondosos, ou o agradável cair da água que corre com ímpeto,

18Whether it were a whistling wind, or a melodious noise of birds among the spreading branches, or a pleasing fall of water running violently,

19ou o terrível estrondo de pedras que rolam, ou a corrida invisível de animais que saltam, ou o rugido das feras mais selvagens, ou o eco que ressoa das cavidades dos montes, tudo isso os fazia desfalecer de medo.

19Or a terrible sound of stones cast down, or a running that could not be seen of skipping beasts, or a roaring voice of most savage wild beasts, or a rebounding echo from the hollow mountains; these things made them to swoon for fear.

20Pois o mundo inteiro brilhava com luz clara, e ninguém era impedido nos seus trabalhos;

20For the whole world shined with clear light, and none were hindered in their labour:

21somente sobre eles se estendia uma noite pesada, imagem das trevas que depois os haviam de receber; mas eles eram para si mesmos mais pesados do que as trevas.

21Over them only was spread an heavy night, an image of that darkness which should afterward receive them: but yet were they unto themselves more grievous than the darkness.
